Long week for Ultra 94 champs!
Matt Champagne and Frank Launi's week long adventure at Mid-Ohio

LEXINGTON, OHIO - Sunoco Team Ultra 94 champions Matt Champagne and Frank
Launi were at Mid-Ohio last week for the Grand Am Cup series Emco Gears
Classic. The two Ultra 94 Champions would drive a SCADAPack Chevrolet
Cobalt SS Supercharged from the Georgian Bay Motorsports Team in the ST class.

The two got a helping hand, when John Heinricy and Ron Fellows organized a
test day Monday with the street version of the Cobalt SS, that they would
drive on the weekend. "The test day in the street versions of the Cobalt
was a great help," said Launi. "It was a great car, good power, amazing
handling, and I just had to wonder how much better the race car would be."
"We both got good feedback from Heinricy which was awesome," said
Champagne. "We had the opportunity to drive him around then we switched."

Thursday was a practice day, and the duo, were on the pace of the other
Georgian Bay Motorsports Cobalts, one of which is driven full time by
Sunoco Team Ultra 94 member Jamie Holtom.

Qualifying was the first real 'test' for the Sunoco duo, and Frank Launi
took the wheel for qualifying. "I went down the straight on the first lap
and braked, the rear wheels locked and I did all I could to save it, but it
went into the gravel trap," Launi said. The team found a faulty abs sensor,
which had locked the rear wheels. "Frank did a great job to keep it out of
the wall," said car owner Jim Holtom.

The duo started at the back of the field, and Launi was to start the race.
"Ron told me it would probably come to a stop at least twice on the opening
lap, and not to get caught out," Launi said. "I waited for the group to
sort itself out, then I pushed forward. The SCADAPack Chevy Cobalt SS has
great power and handling, and I was able to make my way forward."

Launi was up to 14th, from 35th on the grid, when he pitted to hand over to
Champagne. "I tried hard to conserve the brakes and gearbox for Matt,"
Launi said. After the driver change, the team was informed of an assessed 5
minute penalty handed out to Launi for contact with another driver. "That
penalty is kind of hard to take," Launi said. "I was hit in the rear wheel
with his front bumper."

Champagne left the pits in 29th after serving the penalty, and was able to
make his way back up to 25th by the checkered flag. "I got in an ill car,
with all that rear toe-in. Our primary goal was to get the car to the
finish without inflicting any more damage to it. The SS Cobalt, is amazing
- lots of torque. The team is great, a good group of guys, and thanks Ron,
John and Georgian Bay Motorsports for the opportunity."

"Generally, I was happy with both Matt and Franks overall performance.
Obviously there were some tough lessons for their first race. The penalty
they were assessed - in my opinion - was extremely harsh. But those are
some of the lessons learned, given that it is a new environment for both of
them," said Ron Fellows after the race, and Team leader Jim Holtom thought
both drivers did a good job. "I think they both did very well. The
listened, did what was asked of them, and I think the both got a lot out of
the experience."
