Nissan's Canton Plant Closes in Advance of Hurricane Katrina
CANTON, Miss.--Aug. 29, 2005--Nissan North America's manufacturing plant in Canton, Miss., halted production during the Monday day shift in advance of Hurricane Katrina. Employees were advised to return to their homes beginning at 11:30 a.m. CDT.There are about 4,000 Nissan employees and 1,800 contract and on-site supplier employees at the Canton manufacturing plant, which began vehicle production in May 2003.
The following statement can be attributed to Dave Boyer, vice president, Manufacturing-Canton:
"Due to the hazardous weather conditions created by Hurricane Katrina, Nissan ceased production at its assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, at 11:30 a.m. today (Monday, Aug. 29, 2005). Work is also cancelled on today's afternoon and night shifts. Certainly, we are concerned about the safety of our employees and the disruption created by this serious storm. We are continuously monitoring the hurricane's impact on our employees, on our operations and throughout Mississippi. Production is planned to resume on Tuesday morning, August 30, but the plan is subject to revision, based on the assessment of local conditions tomorrow morning."
The Canton plant produces the Nissan Titan full-size pickup truck, Armada full-size sport-utility vehicle, Altima mid-size sedan, Quest minivan and the Infiniti QX56 full-size luxury sport-utility vehicle.
