FUEL PUMP DRIVE LEADS TO WHELDON'S EARLY EXIT AT INFINEON
SONOMA, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2005) - Klein Tools/Jim Beam driver Dan Wheldon suffered multiple fueling
issues over the course of Sunday's Argent Mortgage Indy Grand Prix at Infineon Raceway, ultimately ending his
day with an 18th-place finish.
Wheldon's problems began less than 20 laps into the 80-lap event when he came into the pits for his
first pit stop. Wheldon took four tires but because of a fueling malfunction, the Klein Tools/Jim Beam crew was
unable to get any fuel into the car. Because of the issue, Wheldon had to re-enter the pits on the following lap
for another attempt.
Over the next 30 laps, Wheldon moved up near the front as the leaders began to make pit stops.
However, on lap 52, the fuel pump drive failed and Wheldon's day was over.
Wheldon's Andretti Green Racing teammate, Tony Kanaan, picked up his second victory of the season
and moved into second place in the Indy Racing LeagueŽ IndyCarŽ Series championship chase. With only three
races remaining, Wheldon holds a 79-point lead over Kanaan and a 96-point lead over Sam Hornish Jr.
Following Kanaan across the finish line were Buddy Rice, Alex Barron, Patrick Carpentier and Tomas
Enge.
Wheldon and the Klein Tools/Jim Beam team will appear next at the Chicagoland Indy 300 on Sunday,
Sept. 11, in Joliet, Ill. ABC will provide live coverage of the 200-lap event at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).
Dan Wheldon, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"Today was a very disappointing day. We had some serious fueling problems throughout the race.
Unfortunately, we were not able to get the finish we needed and that is very frustrating. We obviously lost some
ground toward the championship, which makes Chicago a very important race. I'm hoping we can get back in
the swing of things."
John Anderson, Team Manager, #26 Klein Tools/Jim Beam Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"We had an incident during our first pit stop and it's the first one that I remember. At this stage in the
championship, we're not pleased with our performance. We have a sensor that lets us know when our fuel
pressure is getting low, but that didn't go off and we didn't get any warning. The pressure dropped to zero
immediately and we knew that something catastrophic happened in there."
