Cory McClenathan sits atop Top Fuel at IHRA Skull Gear World Nationals
NORWALK, OHIO (August 27, 2005) - In the crown jewel on the IHRA Hooters
Drag Racing Series schedule, Cory McClenathan, running in his first
competition on the IHRA circuit, placed the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM
AirHog dragster in the No. 1 qualifying position at this weekend's IHRA
Skull Gear World Nationals presented by PPG at Norwalk Raceway Park.
In the first of two qualifying sessions on Friday, McClenathan's FRAM
AirHog dragster served notice that it was the one to beat this weekend
running an elapsed time of 4.630 seconds at 323.43 mph, setting both
ends of the Norwalk Raceway Park track record. He lowered his elapsed
time and the track E.T. record he established earlier in the afternoon,
by running a pass of 4.568 seconds in the second qualifying session
Friday night.
With two qualifying sessions remaining, McClenathan held the provisional
No. 1 spot at the end of Friday's qualifying.
After a lengthy rain delay, qualifying on Saturday finally got
underway. In the first of two-scheduled qualifying sessions on
Saturday, tire shake prevented McClenathan from setting yet another
track record; but, he did remain No. 1 with one session to go in the
fan-favorite Matco Tools "Night of Fire." In the final qualifying
session, the Lake Havasu City, Ariz., driver ran a 4.634 seconds pass at
320 mph to sit atop the final qualifying ladder.
"The competition has been tough this weekend and it's an honor to take
the top spot, a first for me when it comes to the IHRA," said
McClenathan. "The guys did a good job in getting the FRAM AirHog ready
this weekend and hopefully we can go three rounds tomorrow and bring
home the Skull Gear Word Nationals Top Fuel title.
"Evan we're thinking of you. This team wants to win this for Skull Gear
and Torco Race Fuels and Evan Knoll. Skull Gear and Torco Race Fuels
are two of our associate sponsors and it's always good to run in a race
sponsored by one of your marketing partners. It's even better to win it."
When eliminations get underway tomorrow, McClenathan will square off
against No. 8 qualifier Rick Cooper. Cooper recorded a 4.789-second
elapsed time for his quickest time of the weekend.
ELIMINATIONS: McClenathan begins his quest for the IHRA Top Fuel title
on Sunday with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 11 a.m.
