New Residential A/C Business Signals Delphi Growth in Non-Traditional Markets
TROY, Mich., Aug. 23 -- Delphi Corp. has won new business to supply condenser coils to YORK International Corp. for use in the North American residential air conditioning market. YORK is an independent supplier of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) equipment with revenue of over $4.5 billion in 2004.

This new residential air conditioning business illustrates Delphi's continued success in transferring its traditionally automotive expertise into non-automotive markets. Production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2006.
YORK and Delphi began to work together several years ago when United States government regulations required energy efficiency ratings increase from 10 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) to 13 SEER for the residential air conditioning market.
"Delphi's microchannel brazed condenser has provided alternatives to YORK's traditional tube and fin designs helping them achieve their efficiency and performance goals in a smaller package," Ray Johnson, thermal solutions business line executive, Delphi Thermal & Interior, said.
The collaboration of the Delphi and YORK engineering staffs has resulted in a lighter and more compact cooling unit, giving YORK more heat exchange capacity in a significantly smaller package than what would have been possible using tube and fin heat exchanger designs. As a result, this has allowed YORK to design products that meet 13 SEER without increasing the size of the condensing unit, maintaining the same size package when compared to a 10 or 12 SEER unit.
"We are continuing to see our thermal knowledge, honed over almost 100 years in the automotive sector, create a strong value proposition for other customer market segments," Ronald Pirtle, president, Delphi Thermal & Interior, vice president, Delphi Corp., said. "Our systems and components expertise, when aligned with YORK's well established competencies, has helped introduce an exciting and competitive technology to residential cooling."
Since the creation of its thermal solutions business line, Delphi has successfully transferred its automotive heating and cooling expertise to electronics, residential and commercial air conditioning markets.
