AUSTIN WINS IN TAD, HOUGH SCORES IN TAFC AT INTERMOUNTAIN MOTOR SPORTS
PARK'S NHRA LUCAS OIL SERIES EVENT
ACTON, Mont. - The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at
Intermountain Motor Sports Park is in the books. It was a lopsided day in
the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks where each of the top three qualifiers were
eliminated in the first round and the last driver to make the field, Mike
Austin, Medford, Ore., took the win. Things were a little less dramatic in
Top Alcohol Funny Car eliminations where Junction City, Ore., racer Brian
Hough, the No. 3 qualifier, took the win.
Austin beat No. 1 qualifier Hillary Will in the first round.
His 5.614-second, 256.02 mph pass bested Will's 5.623-second, 258.76 mph
effort. In the semis he had a bye into the final where he knocked off
Robert Perkins of Bluffdale, Utah, with a 5.599-second, 255.10 mph run.
For Austin, this was his best performance of the season and his
first final-round appearance in Top Alcohol Dragster competition. It also
marked the first time he advanced beyond the first round at the divisional
level.
This was Hough's second final-round in as many races. He was
runner-up two weeks ago in Mission, B.C. In the first round today, he beat
Robert Kanenwisher of Conifer, Colo., and in the semis he knocked off
defending Pacific Division champion Doug Gordon of Paso Robles, Calif., when
Gordon red-lighted. In the final it was a close race with Hank Coolidge of
Sunburst, Mont. Hough ran 5.869 seconds at 247.57 mph to Coolidge's
5.880-second, 243.90 mph run.
Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., earned his second win of the
season in Comp Eliminator and Grant Singer, Regina, Sask., took the win in
Super Stock. Michael Lewis, Sumner, Wash., made his second final-round
appearance of the season in Stock Eliminator, Steve Johnson, Arvada, Colo.,
won in Super Comp, and John Steffen, Littleton, Colo., scored in Super Gas.
The Super Street winner was Alan Percival, Litteton, Colo., and Tracy Holt,
Rivertown, Utah, won in Top Comp. Sportsman Motorcycle competitor Buff
Kobs, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, joined them in the winner's circle.
Northwest Division racers head to Champion Raceway in Eagle
Point, Ore., for their final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the
season, October 7 and 8.
