Coughlin gets a bone on the season's worst dog day

A long hot day at Memphis Motorsports Park yielded some great results for
Jeg Coughlin and his Jeg's Mail Order Dodge Stratus R/T race team. The two-time
Memphis winner managed to get a handle on the hottest conditions of the year
and actually improve his standing in the field of the 18th annual O'Reilly
NHRA Mid-South Nationals, ultimately finishing qualifying in the 10th slot
overall with a 6.829 at 201.07 mph.

With most of the Pro Stock field struggling just to make it down the
racetrack Saturday, Coughlin posted a pair of impressive runs including a 6.88 in
the middle of the day. He and his yellow and black team now feel confident
about their chances in Sunday's eliminations.

"We were able to slide this car down a 140-degree racetrack two times today
and I think that's pretty impressive," Coughlin said. "Our guys should be
proud of themselves. To win races you have to adapt to whatever the conditions
are that you face. Here it's obviously pretty treacherous so just getting down
the track seems like a big deal.

"For us to improve today is phenomenal. The guys really worked on this thing
with the engine and the transmission just trying to find a way to keep it on
the track. It's slick and bumpy and the guy that can get from one end to the
other every time has a big advantage."

For the fourth time this year Coughlin will face his DSR teammate Richie
Stevens in eliminations, this time in Round 1. So far, Coughlin has won two of
their three head-to-head showdowns. In this instance, Stevens will have lane
choice thanks to his slightly quicker qualifying time of 6.820 seconds.

"You never want to meet your teammate early in the day but it's going to
happen from time to time," Coughlin said. "It's like racing your own car when we
line up because we share everything. Hopefully it'll come down to driving
and may the best man win."

Eliminations begin with Top Fuel action at 3 p.m. Pro Stock should hit the
track around 4 p.m
