BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY
SHORT WINS #1
BARROW & HILLMAN WIN TOO
BLOOMINGTON, IN (AUGUST 20, 2005) - Last night the good folks with Hoosier Auto Racing Fans (HARF) joined us for an exciting evening of racing action. Because it was HARF Night their members enjoyed the evening for only $5.00 (half price). For $10 a couple could take their family (assuming the children were twelve and under) to Bloomington Speedway for only $10. Compare that to the cost of going to the movies. At the full admission price of $10 it's still a bargain. But the HARF members were treated to a remarkable deal. HARF members are among the folks who keep our sport as vibrant as it is; and we at Bloomington Speedway are happy for the opportunity to thank them a couple of times a year for their support.
In addition to the HARF members, it was a particularly good night for the O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe Count Pizza Dept. modified racers. It was their racer appreciation night; and, thanks to help from Erwin Drywall and Groomer Paving, the modified racers were running for more money last night.
SPRINT CARS -
At the beginning of the evening last night National Speed Sport News reporter Mike O'Leary predicted that we would have a first time feature winner in the sprint car division. Although neither of us realized it at the time, the odds were pretty good that we would have a first time winner. Kevin Briscoe was the only driver entered who had won on the red clay.
Young Brent Beauchamp set quick time with a time of 11.546 seconds. Kenny Carmichael, Jr., Kevin Briscoe, and Dave Peperak won the heat races. Peperak was particularly happy with his heat race win. Dave is a low dollar racer who just loves the sport; and it was great to see him win.
Jon Sciscoe crashed hard during qualifications. His team tried valiantly to get the car repaired for the feature; but it was too badly damaged.
When the green flag waved to start the feature, Kenny Carmichael and Brady Short started side by side on the front row. Kevin Briscoe was the second fastest qualifier; and he started inside of the third row beside fast qualifier Beauchamp. Short took the initial lead with Carmichael in tow; although Short seemed to be faster, Carmichael wasn't letting him get out of range either. However, a more serious threat to Short's lead was a couple of cars back. Kevin Briscoe was coming. Briscoe took third on the fourth lap.
On the 14th lap Briscoe slipped past Carmichael to take second place. Although Briscoe was in second place, Short still had a pretty good lead on him. However, they soon hit lapped traffic; and there is probably no acceptable substitute for Briscoe's many years of practice in running down other racers in traffic. As they worked their way through lapped traffic, Briscoe was operating closer and closer to Short's back bumper. Briscoe continued to scramble through traffic to set Brady up for the kill, However, with only two laps to go, Mitch Wissmiller rolled to a stop bringing out a yellow flag. At the same time Briscoe was rolling to a stop in turn one. Most of the fans almost certainly expected to see Kevin stop in the work area, probably to change a tire. When they pushed Kevin through the work area to the pits, everyone knew that his evening was done and that another feature win would have to wait for another day. I'm certain that Briscoe believed that he could have scored the feature win if his car hadn't bailed on him. Had the yellow not flown, Briscoe's experience in traffic might well have carried the day. However, with a clear track ahead of Short; I don't think that even Briscoe could have passed him. He was just too fast. Danny Holtsclaw took up the pursuit of Brady when Briscoe retired. He gave it a great try; but he wasn't about to beat Short last night.
From victory lane, Short commented, "This is great! We've worked so hard all year. My Dad should have fired me a long time ago."
Holtsclaw held on to finish second trailed by Kenny Carmichael, Brent Beauchamp, and Kevin Besecker..
Cramer Holds Off Boknecht For O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept Modified Win -
O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept modified racers turned out in force for their appreciation night. Gary Barrow, Ryan Thomas, Jeff Bland, Jr., and Clint DeMoss won the heat races. Ray Humphrey won the "B" feature; while Jeff Bland, Jr. took the dash.
When the green flag waved to start the feature, Gary Barrow charged into the lead trailed by Rodney Harris, Jr. and Jeff Bland, Jr. Matt Boknecht started mid pack; but, by the fifth circuit, he was running sixth. By the ninth lap Boknecht had taken fifth while the front runners remained the same. On the 13th lap he took third. He finally got around Harris to take second on the 22nd circuit; but Gary Barrow was not to be denied. He completed his flag to flag victory run.
Hillman Wins Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock Feature -
Troy Clark looked like the man to beat in the Tire & Wheel Center super stock division last night. He won his heat race and the dash to earn the right to start on the pole. He led the first five laps and was running strong. However, on the sixth circuit he pulled into the infield and rolled to a stop. The feature was up for grabs. Of course, it was anyone's race who could win it from the start. But, with Clark out of competition everyone else had just a little better chance. Chris Hillman took the point with Kevin Arthur on his tail. Kent Robinson inherited third place at the same time. On the 16th lap Kevin Arthur was sidelined; and that left Hillman in the lead with Robinson in second place. They would run that way until the checkered flags waved. Jeremy Hines came from mid-pack third. Points leader Danny Harris started 13th and worked his way up to fourth.
Ben DuBois, Winston Howe, Terry Arthur, Travis Todd, Anthony Walker, and Mike Jones rounded out the top ten.
In preliminary action Kevin Arthur, Travis Todd, and Troy Clark won the heat races while Winston Howe won the "B" Feature. Clark prevailed in the dash.
