WJ Slots Seventh Midway Through Memphis Qualifying
Event: 18th Annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals
Day/Date: Friday, August 19, 2005
Location: Memphis Motorsports Park, Memphis, TN
Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts GTO Racing team continued
their learning procedure with their new race car during Friday's opening
action at the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals in Memphis, TN. With
temperatures nearing 100 degrees at Memphis Motorsports Park, they would
make their first two qualifying passes under conditions they had never
seen with this particular chassis, testing their ability to extrapolate
data from previous races.
Fortunately, the team responded in winning fashion, posting two solid
runs, with their best effort of 6.824-seconds at 201.34 mph slotting
them in the seventh position midway through qualifying, with The
Professor looking to improve his standing during one of his final two
attempts on Saturday.
"With the limited time we have had with this GM Performance Parts GTO,
our database remains fairly small. After all, we came here with less
than twenty runs on it. As a result, we are still trying to determine
its tuning window.
"In some cases, it has responded as expected, whereas other times, it's
thrown us a curve. We need to make good, straight runs from the
starting line to finish line. When it does that, it has already shown
its potential. Our job is to do it every time.
"For example, today, we fought to keep it straight, which scrubbed off a
little speed. We'll try and address it tomorrow, and see if we can move
up a few spots for Sunday."
