ACTON, Mont. - In the first rounds of qualifying at the 2nd
Annual NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Intermountain Motor Sports
Park, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Johnson and Top Alcohol Funny Car
pilot Clint Thompson took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.
Johnson, a former Northwest Division Top Alcohol Dragster champion from
Shelton, Wash., set the pace running 5.661 seconds at 249.12 mph. He nudged
out second place qualifier Robert Perkins of Bluffdale, Utah, by just a
thousandth (.001) of a second.
Klamath Falls, Ore., resident Thompson made a 5.845-second, 244.47 mph run
to put him in the lead spot. No. 2 qualifier Doug Gordon of Paso Robles,
Calif., ran 5.875 seconds at 246.35 mph.
Top qualifiers in other classes were Clint Sallee of Glendive, Mont., in
Comp Eliminator; Pocatello, Idaho's Jon Percy in Super Stock; and Scott
Burton of Golden, Colo., in Stock Eliminator. In Top Comp Richmond, B.C.,
racer Shawn Cowie was No. 1 and Mike Scott of Sumner, Wash., claimed the top
spot in Sportsman Motorcycle.
Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Intermountain
Motorsports Park. Qualifying and time trials will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
Gates open at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
qualifying is scheduled at noon and 4 p.m. On Sunday, gates open at 8 a.m.
and eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny
Car will run first round at noon.
Tickets are $15 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 6 to 12 years old are
half-price each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid
