AORC Sponsors Detroit Event to Reduce Vehicle Brain Injuries
WASHINGTON, Aug. 11, 2005 -- The Automotive Occupant Restraints Council (AORC) will be a Bronze Sponsor for the inaugural L.A.P.S. Walk (Leadership & Awareness to Promote Safety) to be held on Wednesday, August 17, at the Michigan International Speedway. The event will be conducted by the Brain Injury Association of Michigan and the Race2Safety Foundation established by Ernie Irvan, Daytona 500 winner and one of NASCAR's Fifty Greatest Drivers.
"Motor vehicle crashes represent 62% of all transportation related traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and is the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds," said George F. Kirchoff, AORC president. "Our members are proud to help support an event like this which will advance injury education, advocacy, research, support, and prevention."
Mr. Kirchoff added that AORC members are at the forefront of research and development of advanced safety systems and components and have been for more than four decades. "The silent epidemic of TBI costs this country more than $50 billion each year and that does not begin to measure the pain and suffering to victims and their families," Mr. Kirchoff said.
The AORC logo will be prominent on the Show Car that will travel to schools, safety conventions, and race tracks across the U.S. following the event to promote prevention and education of traumatic brain injury, bicycle, and automotive safety.
The AORC, founded in 1961, is a non-profit, international organization whose mission is to help save lives and reduce injuries in motor vehicle- related crashes through the use of advanced life-saving technologies. Members include manufacturers and suppliers of airbags, airbag components, seat belts, automotive seating, and interior safety components.
