In Summer Thunder Qualifying
Cleves, Ohio - Marty Thacker, of Illinois, ran 5.52 seconds at
260.34 mph and Mick Snyder, of Indiana, 5.84 at 237.09 to hold down the
No. 1 qualifying spots in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
after weather led to an abbreviated qualifying schedule for Summer
Thunder -- the fourth of six 2005 events of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series being contested in NHRA's North Central Division.
Snyder is the defending TAFC champion at Edgewater Sports Park,
site of the event. He is also the defending North Central Division
champion and is the 2005 points leader but is still looking for his
first win this season.
Thacker, meanwhile, has won this season, taking the victory at
Mid-Michigan in July. But despite his success he comes into the
Edgewater event in fourth place in the North Central standings.
More than 550 drivers and their crews are on hand, attempting to
improve their position in NHRA North Central and national Lucas Oil
Series points standings. There is $135,000 up for grabs this weekend
and a $561,000 post-season bonus fund from Lucas.
Summer Thunder is part of one of the most active weekends in the
history of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, as seven rain-delayed
and regularly scheduled events are being held this week all across the
country. The changes in the national and divisional point standings
potentially could be dramatic.
In the special added Top Sportsman eliminator at Edgewater, Ohio's
Troy Coughlin leads the way with his '05 Chevy Cavalier.
Final Eliminations for Summer Thunder on Sunday will now begin at 8 a.m.
with the first rounds of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
at 1 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adult general admission and pit pass. Children
6-12 are $5 and those five years old and younger are admitted free with
a paid adult.
Edgewater Sports Park is located off I-75 at the Cleves/Miamitown exit.
Continue through Miamitown, right on SR 128 and U.S. 52. Turn right on
