Rain postpones Friday qualifying at SGMP


 

CECIL, Ga. -The opening day of racing at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series event presented by CSR Performance Products, being held this
weekend at South Georgia Motorsports Park, was postponed today due to
rain. 

            Racing will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. Competitors in the
TracStar Systems Satellites Top Sportsman Series, as well as those in
Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street
will each receive one qualifying attempt, with eliminations in all
classes scheduled to being in the afternoon. The competitors in the
250-mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car categories will each receive
one run at 10:30 a.m., with eliminations to following at 2 p.m. 

            Before the rain ended the day's activities, racers in Stock
Eliminator took to the South Georgia quarter-mile for their lone
qualifying attempt. After one round of qualifying in the class, Greg
Rowe of Bridgeton, N.C., is the leader. Also claming spots in the Stock
Eliminator top 10 are Georgia racers, Robbie Shaw of Douglasville, Butch
Payne of Rome and Jeff Hairrington of Perry. 

The gates at SGMP will open tomorrow at 8 a.m. with qualifying and time
trials set to resume at 9 a.m., leading off with Super Stock. Qualifying
in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car is scheduled for 10:30
a.m., with eliminations to follow at 2 p.m.

The activities which were set to take place today and that are scheduled
for Saturday are part of a double header for Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series competitors. Tomorrow will feature the continuations of
qualifying and final eliminations from the SGMP event which was
postponed from June, as well as final qualifying and eliminations on
Saturday and Sunday from the postponed Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
event that was slated to take place at Gainesville Raceway.

Tickets each day are $20 for adults and $5 for Children 6 to 12 years
old. Children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.  

            South Georgia Motorsports Park is located 12 miles north of
Valdosta, Ga.  Take I-75 (from the north or south) to Exit 32, Old
Coffee Road.  Take Old Coffee Road east to Highway 41 and go north to
