SCCA ProSoloists' Championship Hopes
High This Weekend in Toledo
TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 5, 2005) - It has been a simple equation in The Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo National Series in 2005 - less events than in years prior equals more pressure to perform well each time out.
And as the SCCA ProSolo regular season wraps up this weekend in Toledo, Ohio, the pressure level on those Soloists hoping to win their class' point championship is greater than ever.
As SCCA ProSolo rules state, competitors are allowed to count their best two events out of three in terms of points earned, before the championship-deciding finale in Topeka, Kan.
The Toledo event is the third of the season east of the Mississippi River, meaning competitors who didn't make a trip to one of three western events have just one more shot to add points to their total in an attempt to keep, take or tie for the lead in their class.
It may be cliché, but it truly is anybody's game in G Stock, which has seen five different winners in five ProSolo events this season. Three of those winners - Brian Garfield, of Mt. Airy, Md.; Mark Chiles, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and Jeff Jacobs, of Philadelphia, Pa. - are entered for this weekend, trying to grab the points lead heading into next month's finale.
H Stock is also a three-way battle for the top spot as Anthony Defiore, of Catasauqua, Pa., is going for his second class win of the year. Behind him, 2004 HS ProSolo champion Michael Potocki, of Kenmore, N.Y., is looking for his first win of the year to go with a pair of second-place showings, while Marshall Cone, of Sterling, Va., has finished third twice in pursuit of his first win.
Steve Wynveen, of Germantown, Wis., won A Stock earlier this year in Atlanta, but finds himself behind current AS leader Scott McHugh, who won two western events. Wynveen will have a chance to pull even with McHugh, but he'll have to take on salty veterans Jason Saini, of Lake Forest, Ill., and Robert Carpenter, of Knoxville, Tenn., who are always in the mix.
There's a whole lot of strategy being played out in B Stock, where Ron Bauer, of Renton, Wash., and Sam Strano, of Brookville, Pa., are entered. Both have two wins, and consequently, the maximum 40 points, already, but will compete in an attempt to take up the top spots and thwart other B Stock competitors from earning higher point totals.
In Street Touring X, Josh Sortor leads the class currently, but won't be in Toledo this weekend. That opens the door for competitors like Courtney Cormier, of Richmond, Va., who needs one more win to tie Sortor's 40 points. Others trying to stick their hand into the championship pot include long-time competitor Bob Tunnell, of Superior, Colo., and Michael King, of Jacksonville, Fla.
Action gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Toledo Express Airport. The first car will go out on Sunday at 8 a.m., followed by the Hawk Performance Super Challenge at 1 p.m.
