Lebanon Valley Speedway Release
Corellis, Collins, and Langenback Survive for Victories!
By: Rodney Rescott July 30, 2005
West Lebanon, NY: The crowds flocked to the High Banks of Lebanon Valley
Speedway this past Saturday, to witness racing at it's finest. Every class
and every race was battled right to the bitter end. Sheldon Oil, Big Boys
Toys and CLS Transportation presented the evenings festivities, with plenty
of action on the speedway.
Earlier in the evening, a scary crash involved the #44 of Dave Leckonby and
Guy Sheldon's #42 during the warm-ups; put the two racers, and their cars,
out for night. The #42 of Sheldon lost his brakes going into turn 1, making
heavy contact with Leckonby. Both were shaken, but walk away.
When the Modifieds took to the speedway for their 30 lap main event, the
crowd was ready for a battle. The #28 of Al McCoy brought the field to the
green. As the field reached the first turn, there was contact between the
#87x of Paul Gilardi, and the #34R of Russ Reckner, sending Reckner to the
outside wall with heavy contact. That sparked off a chain reaction the saw
the #87x shoot back across the speedway directly in the path of the #20 of
Matt Quinn. The #20 took a violent spill, finally coming to rest on the
bottom of the speedway. After the red flag was displayed for nearly 20
minutes, the field again was fired with no laps on the board. Out of the
race was the #20 of Quinn, the #34R of Reckner, the #87x of Gilardi, and the
#88D of Ron Dwyer. All drivers walked away except for Quinn, who was taken
by ambulance to the hospital as a precaution and further observation. No
further word at press time.
The field was then reassembled, and got the green again. And it didn't take
long to see who had the car to beat. As the #21 Rifenberg Construction car
of Donnie Corellis took the lead and began to pull away. But he didn't get
far, as the #45 K&F Modulars of Wayne Jelley made his way to second,
followed by JR Heffner's #74. But Heffner wasn't alone, because "Fast"
Eddie Marshall was on a rail, and was closing fast. For the next 20 or so
laps, it was the 4 horsemen, out front, rubbin' wheels, swapping lanes,
side-by-side, down low, and up high, but no one car had an advantage.
After a couple of short cautions, it just wasn't enough for any of the top
four to make a move, as Donnie Corellis held off Mr. Excitement for the win.
Following Corellis over the line was Jelley, followed by Heffner, Marshall
and the #1 of Brett Hearn.
The Sportsman division saw an excellent battle to get to the front as Art
Collins, K.C. Goewey, Ryan Larkin and Bobby Knipe charged from deep in the
field. But in the end, it was Collins, taking his 5th of the year, followed
by K.C Goewey, Neil Stratton, Ryan Larkin, and the #18 of Knipe.
The Prostocks saw the ole wily veteran of Jim Langenback and his #54L charge
through the pack to pass race leader Jay Corbin, with just 2 laps to go, to
take his 2nd of 2005. Corbin's #8 held on to second from a hard charging
#76 of last weeks winner, Kevin Arnold. Rob Yetman muscled his way to 4th,
followed by Mike Middleton's #38M. The Rookies, after some mid-race
"extra-curricular" activities, had the #311 of Brian Keogh cross the line
first, followed by Jim Cronk, John Rivers Jr., John Santolin, and Jerry
Wright came home 5th.
The action was hot and heavy, as usual, in the Pure Stocks as well. And for
the fans that come out a little early, they got to see some fantastic
wheel-to-wheel action in all four events. In Pure Stock #1 it was Joe
Landry with the win, after a post-race DQ of the #8 Jeff Douglass, Pure
Stock #2 had the #28 of Brian Houghtaling force his way to the top spot.
Pure Stock #3 was taken by Jon Routhier's #015, and Pure Stock #4 saw the
#073 of Dave Streibel take home the win.
Next week is the County Concrete, and Taconic DSL Night with all divisions
on tap for racing action. Also, Monday, August 15th, it's the First Ever
Appearance of the World of Outlaws Late Models to Lebanon Valley, as Team
Goewey and Carquest bring you the Dirty Dozen. The Tail Gate Party is in
effect, so get you tickets now, while their still available. For
