SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2005) - Under clear Sonoma Valley skies,
qualifying for the 18th annual NHRA FRAM Autolite Nationals came to an
end today with Cory McClenathan firmly entrenched in the No. 6 position.
After opening qualifying with a run of 4.671 seconds, McClenathan reeled
off a pass of 4.566 seconds at 319.75 mph in the Carrier Boyz Racing
FRAM AirHog Top Fuel dragster to momentarily hold the top spot in the
evening session. He eventually finished the first day of qualifying in
the No. 6 position.
"That final pass was fantastic," said McClenathan, as he recounted
Friday's last run. "Since this race is sponsored by FRAM and Autolite,
it's a big deal for us to do well here. On Saturday we will try to be
consistent and get the FRAM AirHog ready for Sunday."
On Saturday, Todd Smith (crew chief) and Bob Bauer (clutch specialist)
used the two session to tune the car for tomorrow's conditions. In the
first session, McClenathan pedaled his way to a respectable run of 4.846
seconds, the fifth quickest of the session, following that with
4.643-second pass to end qualifying.
"Four consistent run during qualifying for this FRAM AirHog dragster,"
said McClenathan from the top end of the track following qualifying.
"Todd and Bob and the guys have got this car back on track this
weekend. We used today to prepare for eliminations and I think we are
ready.
"I want to personally thank the management and employees of FRAM,
Autolite, Prestone and Bendix for giving both Carrier Boyz Racing and me
the opportunity to go racing. Let's have a good dinner together
tonight, then go out tomorrow and try and put the FRAM AirHog car in the
FRAM Autolite Nationals winner's circle. I think we have a real
opportunity to do just that."
McClenathan, who enters this event ninth in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel
point standings, will match up against "Hot" Rod Fuller, who qualified
No. 11 with a pass of 4.635 seconds.
