Qualifying ends with Chip Ellis aboard the G2 S&S Buell ninth
SONOMA, Calif. (July 30, 2005) - Under a clear sky and with a slight
wind at Infineon Raceway, qualifying for the 18th annual NHRA FRAM
Autolite Nationals came to an end today with Chip Ellis, aboard the G
Squared S&S Buell, qualified in the No. 9 position.
The quickest run of four qualifying sessions for Ellis was a
7.131-second pass in the opening session on Friday
Tomorrow Ellis will face Craig Treble in the opening round of
eliminations. Treble qualified in the eighth position with an elapsed
time of 7.123 seconds.
"G Squared and S&S Cycle are really happy our customers are doing as
well as they are," said George Smith, partner and co-owner, along with
George Bryce, of G Squared Motorsports. "Frankly though, the
competitive side of me would like to see us, meaning G Squared, improve
our performance.
"We need to be able to put more time into our own projects. We've need
to bring out our new chassis so that we can return to the consistency
and performance level we enjoyed at the end of last season. Also, so
that all S&S engines perform to the high standard that has come to be
associated with S&S, our longevity and breakage program, sometimes, has
not allowed us to perform the way we would have liked.
"For tomorrow we are checking all our data, making chassis adjustments
and tuning adjustments to enhance our performance during eliminations."
S&S ENGINE REVIEW: As noted above Chip Ellis qualified No. 9. Both
Ryan Schnitz and Chris Rivas qualified in the top half of the field,
Schnitz finishing No. 2 and Rivas No. 3. Matt Guidera qualified No. 14.
ELIMINATIONS: Ellis begins his quest for the Pro Stock Motorcycle title
on Sunday with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 11 a.m.

G SQUARED MOTORSPORTS: When Harley Davidson accelerated their effort in
NHRA, S&S Cycle decided in 2002 to join the battle. Because of his vast
R&D experience, coupled with his racing background, S&S asked George
Smith to head their project to field a competitive S&S V-Twin bike on
the NHRA circuit. Smith immediately asked George Bryce, who had been
working with S&S Cycle on a similar project, to join the new endeavor
and G Squared Motorsports was formed in 2003. Both Smith and Bryce knew
if they collaborated on the project, joining the resources, knowledge
and talents of S&S and Star Racing, they could produce a competitive
bike to race in Pro Stock Motorcycle competition on the NHRA POWERade
Drag Racing Series. The G Squared/S&S-powered V-Twin Buell debuted in 2004.
