Jeg's Northern SPORTSnationals springs into action in Columbus

HEBRON, Ohio - More than 400 of the nearly 575-pre entered NHRA Lucas
Oil Drag Racing Series competitors took to the track today for the
opening day of the inaugural NHRA Jeg's Northern SPORTSnationals at
National Trail Raceway.  The event is the first all-sportsman NHRA
national event in the Midwest since 1986, when the original
SPORTSnationals was last held at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green,
Ky. 

            After one of four scheduled qualifying runs, Allyn Armstrong
of Kingston, N.S. is the early leader in Comp Eliminator. Armstrong
drove his L/A '72 Opel GT to a run of 9.106-seconds. Claiming the No. 2
spot is Mineral Wells, W.V. racer Mike Smith with his '02 Neon. Wayne
Henderson of Fishers, Ind., is third in his dragster.   

            Brian Oakes of DeBary, Fla., is the leader in Super Stock,
followed by Dayton's Dave Layer in second and Delaware's John Coughlin
in third. 

            After three of six scheduled qualifying runs, Keith Lynch of
Mount Ayr, Iowa is the top qualifier in Stock Eliminator. Holding on to
the second spot in the class is Brockport, N.Y., racer Paul Dilcher.
Rounding out the top 10 qualifiers in the No. 9 and 10 spots are Ohio
racers Joey Wilkes of Zanesville and Donald Holmes of Dayton. 

            At the conclusion of racing, competitors were welcomed to
the Jeg's Racer Appreciation barbecue presented by Quick Fuel to kick
back and relax with their fellow racers.  

The on-track action continues tomorrow with additional qualifying and
time trials beginning with Stock Eliminator at 8 a.m. In the afternoon,
Newark, Ohio's Troy Coughlin and his fellow AMS Staff Leasing/TLR Pro
Mod competitors will blaze down the National Trail Raceway quarter-mile
with performances in the 6.20-second zone at over 225 mph at 2 and 6
p.m.

            Gates open tomorrow at 7 a.m. General admission tickets,
including a pit pass, are $15 each day adults, $5 for children 8-12
years old and free for children under 7. For more information on the
