RINGERS GLOVES WEEKEND WRAP-UP
Two Ringers’ Racers in Winner’s Circle; Two More with Top Five Finishes

Moorpark, Calif. - (July 25, 2005) The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA)
made their second stop on their Western Swing at Pacific Raceways in Kent,
Wash., over the weekend. While the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers were on
the opposite coast at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.
In NHRA action, Brandon Bernstein toppled current Top Fuel point leader Tony
Schumacher in final round elimination on Sunday.
Schumacher’s U.S. Army rail spun the tires right off the line, but Bernstein
crossed the line with a 4.527-second/329.99 mph run, claiming his second win
of the season.
Schumacher retains the points lead over Doug Kalitta by 43 points.
Pro Stock finals paired Kurt Johnson and Ron Krisher at the Tree, but only
one showed up for the dance.
In semifinals as Krisher scored the win over Jeg Coughlin Jr., his Chevrolet
Cobalt veered into the wall before skidding down the track and turning back
over onto all fours. Krisher escaped from the wreckage, but his day was
over.
K.J. staged at the Tree and coasted down the track (NHRA rules state the
driver must stage and take the light to count as a pass) for the official win
with a 16.320-second/75.14 mph pass.
Two of Penske Racing South’s drivers scored finishes in the top five at the
Pennsylvania 500 on Sunday. One of the driver’s was his last race there.
Rusty Wallace made his final laps at the 2.5-mile superspeedway and didn’t
go out without a fight. He stayed in the top 10 most of the day and even led
a few laps, but wasn’t strong enough for eventual winner Kurt Busch.
Wallace finished second while his teammate Ryan Newman came home in fifth.
The fifth place finish for Newman wasn’t an easy one, as he and teammate
Travis Kvapil were both plagued with tire issues early on. Newman was
obviously able to overcome his, while Kvapil’s sidelined him when his tire shredded
and blew out an oil line giving him a 38th place finish.
The NHRA straight liners head to Napa Valley for the Fram Autolite NHRA
Nationals at Infineon Raceway this weekend, as the Nextel Cup Series has a weekend
off before the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on August 7.
