Rob Bunker - Birmingham preview

seven driving styles

Rob Bunker made good use of his six-week hiatus between Formula BMW USA
races. The Bridgewater, N.J., driver isolated and honed elements of his
performance in two race cars – his No. 18 AIM Autosport Formula BMW FB2 and
a higher-horsepower Formula Renault 2000. He worked on driving styles such
as acceleration into and out of a turn, maintaining momentum and focused
corner entry or exit speed.

"We worked on things driver-related; we worked on seven basic driving
styles. It rained, too, so we had to up the performance a little bit for
that," Bunker reported. "We would do the entire track with just one style
and figure out which corners it worked in and didn't work in, then piece
everything together. It gave me time to break down any particular corner.
When I only had to focus on that one thing, we ended up going very fast."

Bunker was preparing for his next two Formula BMW races, scheduled for July
30 and 31 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. He hopes his extra
testing, plus a variety of driving experiences, will contribute to the
team's results.

"I've been to Barber before, with one of the test days BMW had. We did
fairly well when we went there, so I'm expecting a pretty good performance.
I know no one has an upper hand on it," he noted. "I think some of the extra
time we took in the Renault 2000 will help us because we had extra seat
time. I hopped in some karts, too. I tried to stay nimble between races with
all sorts of forms of motorsports."

licensed

Although he has been racing for years, Bunker, 16, is too young to hold a
full driver license in New Jersey. But he will receive his special learner
permit this week, after passing a required driver training course. He's
looking forward to getting his motorcycle license, too, so he can enjoy his
new BMW BoxerCup motorcycle.
