18TH ANNUAL NHRA CARQUEST AUTO PARTS NATIONALS
PACIFIC RACEWAYS - SEATTLE
JULY 22-24, 2005
McClenathan hopes to continue momentum at Seattle*
KENT, Wash. (July 20, 2005) - Coming off one of the best outings in some
time, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog
Top Fuel dragster, is hoping that the new chassis that debuted last
weekend in Denver will continue the new found momentum this weekend in
the Pacific Northwest.
On the eve of the NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Pacific Raceways
in Kent Wash., near Seattle, McClenathan is excited due to the
turnaround the team made at Denver. At that event he advanced to the
semifinals.
"I'm hoping the momentum from Denver will carryover from the high
altitude of the mile-high city to being near sea level in Seattle," said
McClenathan. "I think having the new car out for the rest of the season
will definitely help us. You can tell by watching the video the way the
car was leaving at Denver that it seems back to its good old self.
"When (crew chief) Todd (Smith) made changes and (clutch specialist) Bob
(Bauer) made changes the car reacted to the changes. We'll tell when we
get back down to sea level if we've really got the car that we think we
have.
"Looking back, we had a pretty good car last weekend. The guys did a
great job preparing the new car and running as well as we did. I feel a
lot better now and a little more confident. Winning rounds will do that
to you. We'll approach Seattle with the same attitude as Denver and
hope that we're able to carry the momentum right through Seattle and on
to the FRAM Autolite Nationals in Sonoma (Calif.)."
McClenathan seems to like the Seattle track, having gone to the final
round four times and winning one. He defeated Scott Kalitta here in
1998 and was runner up to Tommy Johnson, Jr. in 1993 and Ron Capps in
1995 - back when both drivers drove Top Fuel dragsters. He also was
runner up to Joe Amato in 1998.
Entering this event, McClenathan is currently No. 9 in the NHRA POWERade
Top Fuel point standings. He now has accumulated 654 points and is 14
points behind eighth, 22 behind seventh and 94 behind sixth. He needs
to make up 172 points to move into the No. 5 spot. The Carrier Boyz
Racing team has a goal of finishing in the top five this season.
