Thompson wins Shouldice ALSTAR race at Sunset

STROUD, ON – It took longer than planned, but Robbie Thompson once again
demonstrated his dominance of Sunset Speedway when the Shouldice ALSTAR
Late Model Series’ seventh feature race of the 2005 season took place on
Sunday, July 17 at the Barrie-area stock car oval.
The race, originally slated to take place on Saturday night, was
pushed back to late in the afternoon on Sunday by recurring rain in the
region. But in the end, neither the weatherman nor a deep starting position
could keep the Shear Metal Products / Logel’s Dodge driver from making his
third consecutive trip to Sunset’s victory lane.
The Southampton, ON resident started 19th in the 24-car field and
quickly moved to the front thanks to a few early caution flags. By lap 15,
the reigning Shouldice ALSTAR points champion was already up to fifth and
showed no sign of slowing during his march to the front.
Thompson completed his charge at the midway point of the race and
held the top spot to the checkered flag to bolster his championship points
lead following seven events. Jason Shaw, who won Race #6 at Kawartha
Speedway on July 8, finished second to Thompson.
Shaw, who resides in Guelph, ON, started eighth at Sunset but was
involved in an early incident that sent him to the back of the pack. The
Spira Ford driver recovered from the setback, however, and demonstrated
he’s capable of putting together solid results after a string of early
season disappointments that plagued him following his season-opening win at
Sauble Speedway. Shaw was running third on the final lap, but executed a
dramatic fourth-turn pass on eventual third-place finisher Derrick
Tiemersma, which included a scrape with the outside wall.

The next Shouldice ALSTAR Late Model Series race takes place on Friday,
July 22 at Delaware Speedway, just outside of London, Ontario.
