Lebanon Valley Speedway 07/16/05
Quinn, Collins, and Corbin Capture Checkers, 358’s See Red!
-By: Rodney Rescott July 16th, 2005
West Lebanon, NY: A fine Mid-July crowd was on hand to witness the fun and
surprises that Rifenberg Construction present at the famed ½ mile High
Banks. Saturday night’s festivities didn’t end with the parade of trucks,
big rigs, vintage cars, and the trio of Rifenberg Construction sponsored big
guns of Donnie Corellis, John Hewitt, and Kenny Tremont, was merely the
beginning one hot night of racing at Lebanon Valley Speedway!
With red, white and blue balloons strewn throughout the speedway and in the
air, it was the Sportsman Division taking to the track for their 20 lap
feature go-round. The front row of Bob Bouchard’s J-5 and the SportsPage
#09 of Kevin Lynch brought the field to the green. The leaders faded
quickly, and found themselves amongst a pack of wolfs deep into the field.
A scary moment for the #09 of Lynch when the #12 of Brian Sandstedt made
contact with Lynch just out of turn 2, sending Lynch sideways in front of
the rest of field. No major contact was made except for the #80 of Kory
Sandstedt. All three retired for the evening. The field was slowed by only
a few more yellows, but it was the “Alligator” Art Collins who led the last
half of the race, and scored his 3rd of 2005. Collins was followed by Don
Miller, Bobby Knipe, K.C. Goewey, and Jeff Watson.
Next up was the Big Block Modifieds. That action was hot, and heavy from
the drop of the green flag. And the usual suspects began making their
charge to the front. Jelley, Marshall, Bachetti, Hearn and Tremont all were
coming to challenge for the lead, but the man to beat was the #21 of Donnie
Corellis. His Rifenberg Construction #21 made quick work of the field, and
began to hunt down the leaders. Corellis’ only problem was the #20 of the
“Mighty” Matt Quinn. He took the lead early in the 30 lapper, and checked
out. Corellis passed his way into 2nd by lap 18, and set sail for Quinn.
It looked as though the #20 was long gone until a caution bunched the field
for a 1 lap shoot out. But in the end, the “Mighty” Quinn survived the
hounding Corellis to capture his first of 2005. Corellis crossed the line
for 2nd, followed by a hard charging Wayne Jelley in his familiar K&F
Modular Homes #45j. 4th went to “Fast” Eddie Marshall’s #98, and 5th was
the #44 of the legendary Dave Leckonby.
Jay Corbin drove his #8 to the victory lane for the first of his career. It
was not a “gimme” as the #78 of Paul LaRochelle, the #38m of Mike Middleton,
Jim Langenback’s #54L, and Rob Yetman’s #7, were nose to tail waiting for a
mistake, but not on this night. Corbin crossed the line first, followed by
Larochelle, Middleton, Langenback, and Yetman. Jim Cronk captured yet
another, Rookie Pro Stock feature.
The 358’s saw the action as the last event of the evening, and those that
stuck around, were not disappointed. As the small blocks took to the
speedway, the action got real hot, real quick, as “Rapid” Roy Bridge showed
the way early in the 24 lapper. But within a few laps, it was the “mighty”
Quinn again, trying for the sweep. His #32Q made his way past the #145 of
Bridge, and it was De Ja Vu for the rest of the field as he began to check
out, again. And with bizarre similarities to the big block feature, here
came the #21 of Donnie Corellis, followed by the #4 of Bachetti and the #115
of Tremont. This time a late race caution left a 3 lap shootout, and Quinn
once again crossed the line first. But the fireworks weren’t over yet. As
post race inspection revealed a rules violation on the #32Q team, and at
press time, the “unofficial” finishing order was the #21 of Donnie Corellis
as the winner, followed by the #4 of Andy Bachetti. Roy Bridge hung in for
3rd, followed by Kenny Tremont’s #115, and Alan Houghtaling’s #250.
Pure Stock #1 was captured by Kevin Winters. 2nd was Dave Streibel, Howard
Madsen, Steve Hatch, and Dave Houser. P.S #2 saw Joe Chenail capture his
first of 2005, followed by Ed Hatch, Jesse Murphy, Kevin Hilt, and Don Coon.
Pure Stock #3 was won by Nick Hilt, 2nd was Al Relyea, 3rd Jon Routhier,
4th Phil Wood, and 5th to Bob Palmer. And P.S #4 was captured by Richard
Puff, followed by Jay LaMountain, John Chapman, Ryan Coon, and Steve Kahler
Jr.
