McClenathan advances to semifinals at Denver
MORRISON, Colo. (July 17, 2005) - In one of his better outing of the
year, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog
dragster, advanced to the semifinals at the 26th annual NHRA Mopar
Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway, near Denver.
In the opening round, McClenathan turned back John Smith. McClenathan,
who hazed the tires on the top end, recorded a pass of 4.988 seconds.
Smith, who was behind at the time, lost a blower belt and coasted to an
elapsed time of over eight seconds.
McClenathan and Larry Dixon met in round two. If there is one driver
that McClenathan has trouble with, it's Larry Dixon. In 38 previous
meeting Cory Mac has only won 14 times. Make that 15 times as
McClenathan once again took the win light.
Against Dixon, McClenathan stopped the finish line timers in 4.742
seconds, the quickest run of round two. In 13 races at Bandimere
Speedway, McClenathan has advanced to at least the semifinals seven times.
That matched McClenathan against Tony Schumacher and it was a drag race
with Schumacher moving to the final round. The finish line boards
showed 4.761 for McClenathan and 4.712 for Schumacher.
Crew chief Todd Smith was pleased with the turnaround. "It was good to
get back to something that works," said Smith. "It's nice to do well
for a change. It looks like the new car helped. We didn't change too
much over what we've been doing for the last few months, so the new pipe
(chassis) must have done its job."
NEXT RACE: The Mopar Mile-High Nationals led off the first of three
consecutive events - Denver, Seattle and Sonoma, Calif. - on three
consecutive weekends, which among the drag racing community is known as
the "Western Swing." Next up is the CarQuest Auto Parts Nationals at
Pacific Raceway in Kent, Wash., near Seattle, the middle of the three
races on the Western Swing
TELEVISION: ESPN2 will air three hours of same-day television coverage
of eliminations beginning tonight (July 17) at 9 p.m. The elimination
show repeats on ESPN2 early Monday morning, July 18, from 2:30 until
4:30 a.m. Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and subject to
change at anytime. Check local listings.
