NHRA Warren Johnson Saturday Update: A Consistent WJ Will Start Second in Denver

A Consistent WJ Will Start Second in Denver

Event: 26th Annual Mile-High NHRA Nationals

Day/Date: Saturday, July 16, 2005

Location: Bandimere Speedway, Denver, CO

The high temperatures that enveloped Bandimere Speedway on Saturday
prevented any changes in the Sunday's Pro Stock starting line-up at the
NHRA Mile-High Nationals in Denver, CO. Having secured the second
starting position with his 7.112-second, 194.24 mph pass on Friday
evening, Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac Racing team
used their final two qualifying passes to test and fine-tune their race
car for race day.

On each attempt, "The Professor" posted the third quickest pass among
the twenty cars entered, with his 7.167 and 7.160-second times showing
the consistency needed to go rounds, giving him cause for optimism as he
pursues his fifth win at the legendary Colorado quarter-mile.

"When we looked at the weather conditions, we knew there were not going
to be any wholesale changes as far as the qualifying positions were
concerned. In fact, we gambled that there wouldn't be any movement and
used today as a test day to see where we stood in relation to everyone
else and go forward from there.

"Overall, it was a productive day. We got a few leads on which way we
need to be tomorrow, as well as some very positive stuff for the future.
Based on the last go round this afternoon, we were only a hundredth off
the quickest car, and we had made some changes that we knew would either
hurt it or help it power wise, and from what we learned, we will make
the necessary adjustments to restore the power, which in turn will pick
up our elapsed time. I believe our GM Performance Parts Pontiac is in
good shape for tomorrow."
