BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY
BLOOMINGTON, IN (JULY 16, 2005) - Indiana Sprint Week's visit to the red clay of Bloomington Speedway is one of the high points of our season every year. It is a race that we and our fans anticipate like Christmas. Yesterday, the afternoon didn't look favorable. There were showers all around Bloomington; and rain was predicted. With all of the weather problems that we've had this season, we were concerned. However, we did what racers do. We charged ahead preparing the speedway for competition. The pits had started to fill; and the rains came. However, after giving us a good soaking they stopped. Mike Miles and his crew had their hands full getting the track prepared for competition. At last, we caught a break from the weatherman; and the fans were treated to a great race.

HINES SCORES FIRST BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY FEATURE WIN -

New Castle's Tracy Hines took advantage of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series' week off to compete in Indiana Sprint Week. He got sprint week off to a good start when he drove to a second place finish at Twin Cities Raceway Park on Thursday night. As big as a second place finish in a sprint week race is, that was not the result that he was seeking. He very much wanted to put the Hoffman sprinter in victory lane.

Things looked good for Tracy when he was the sixth fastest qualifier. If everyone transferred, he would start the feature on the pole. He raced to a third place finish in his heat race to earn a transfer to the feature event.

When the green flag dropped to start the feature, Hines charged into the lead; but one of the toughest sprint car racers in the business, Jay Drake, was on his tail. If that didn't make it a tough enough deal, an entire evening of racing had just been used to select the best 24 racers out of the 60 drivers on hand to deprive him of his first feature win on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. However, last night he would not be denied.

The win was not only Tracy's first win at Bloomington Speedway, it was also the first win for Hoffman Racing. It's hard to imagine that the Hoffman team, one of the most storied teams ever to compete in USAC, had never before scored a feature win here. Most of the top sprint car drivers have, at one time or another, driven for them. In any event, as they usually do, they put a great car under Hines; and he earned that win for them.

During the closing laps of the feature, there was a torrid battle between Jay Drake and Dave Darland for second. Darland managed to hold off the charging Drake to secure his second place finish. Because of that finish, Darland left Bloomington Speedway with the lead in the Indiana Sprint Week points.

Jay Drake came home third ahead of Levi Jones and Thursday night's feature winner, Cory Kruseman.

In preliminary action John Wolfe surprised many of those present when he was the fastest qualifier. Levi Jones, Shane Hollingsworth, Dave Darland, Jay Drake, and Tracy Hines were the balance of the drivers who would be inverted for the start of the feature event.

Since only the fastest 32 qualifiers earn a spot in one of the four heat races in a USAC sprint car program, non qualifiers' races are run to select a driver to be added to the tail of each of the heat races. Two of these races were required last night with Jared Fox and Jerad Parsons transferring from the first non qualifiers' race. Dick Gaines II and Brandon Petty transferred from the second.

Kenny Carmichael, Shane Cottle, Mat Neely and Michael Pickens won the heat races, while Shane Hollingsworth prevailed in the "B" feature.

Indiana Sprint Week points leading going into tonight's race at Lincoln Park Speedway are 1. Dave Darland (135), 2. Tracy Hines (132), 3. Cory Kruseman (120), 4. Levi Jones (114), 5. Jay Drake (95)

GARY BARROW TAKE FIRST O'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS/MONRE COUNTY PIZZA DEPT. FEATURE -

Gary Barrow has been threatening to win an O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept. modified feature for some time now; and, last night, everything came together and he came home with his first feature win here.

Gary's good fortune started with the pill draw. He pulled the number two pill. That would be hard to beat; and nobody did. He started on the pole of the first heat race and won it. That put him on the pole of that dash and he won that too. He would start on the pole of the feature. That one would be a little tougher.

Although Barrow was starting the feature on the pole, he had one of the winningest modified racers ever, Matt Boknecht, starting beside him. Gary clearly had his hands full. He led the feature green to checkered; but Boknecht was never far off Barrow's back bumper. Ray Humphrey, Jesse Cramer, and John DeMoss were there along with Boknecht; and all of them were intent on scoring the feature win themselves. However, last night was Barrow's if he made no mistakes; and he didn't. Boknecht had to settle for second trailed by Humphrey, Cramer, and John DeMoss.

In preliminary action, Barrow, Boknecht, and John DeMoss won the heat races while Greg Deckard won the "B" feature.
