NHRA Warren Johnson Friday Update: WJ Opens Denver Qualifying
Effort in Second
Event: 26th Annual Mile-High NHRA Nationals
Day/Date: Friday, July 15, 2005
Location: Bandimere Speedway, Denver, CO
The opening day of qualifying for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals presented
teams with a multi-faceted tuning challenge. In addition to the thin
air, which robs the naturally aspirated Pro Stock cars of nearly four
hundred horsepower, the weather conditions changed throughout the day at
Bandimere Speedway. After starting with clear skies and temperatures in
the high 90s, a mid-afternoon storm came through, delaying qualifying by
two hours and leaving cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 80s,
creating a completely new set of tuning conditions.
However, this mattered little to Warren Johnson and the GM Performance
Parts Pontiac Racing team, who posted two solid passes, with their 7.112
second, 194.24 mph best establishing a new track record and slotting
them in the second position midway through qualifying.
"I'd say we got off to a fair start today. It was a little lazy on the
first run, so we came back and tuned it up a little bit, and it was fine
for tonight. The best part is that we're going in the right direction.
We just have to go further. I'm confident we'll be able to make this GM
Performance Pontiac even better."
