NHRA Kurt Johnson Friday Update: Friday in Denver Finds KJ in Fourth

Event: 26th Annual Mile-High NHRA Nationals

Day/Date: Friday, July 15, 2005

Location: Bandimere Speedway, Denver, CO

During the first day of qualifying for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, Pro
Stock teams battled to find horsepower in the razor-thin air at
Bandimere Speedway. Their assignment was made even tougher by the
weather, which changed dramatically following an afternoon rainstorm
that delayed the start of qualifying by almost two hours and dropped the
temperature by almost twenty degrees.

Visiting the Colorado quarter-mile for the first time this season, Kurt
Johnson and the ACDelco Cobalt Racing team had their work cut out for
them. Responding as they have all season, they posted two of the
quickest and fastest passes in Pro Stock, with their 7.134-second,
194.04 mph best in the evening session earning them the fourth position
entering Saturday's final two time trials.

"After opening with a pretty good run with our ACDelco Cobalt, we made
some changes for the night session and picked it up, but not as much as
we thought. We felt as though we should have been at the top, but we
were just a bit off, which is what we'll try to pick up tomorrow. The
important part is that we're making good runs, and, most importantly,
we're in the show. We expect tomorrow morning should be a pretty good
session, so we'll make a few more changes and see if we can move up.
We're not worried."
