Coughlin plans to lean on teammate to improve
Jeg Coughlin's first-ever run down Bandimere Speedway in a Mopar Dodge
Stratus R/T was fairly successful as the two-time Pro Stock world champion
successfully qualified in the provisional field of this weekend's 26th annual Mopar
Mile-High Nationals. But Coughlin himself was quick to point out that his No.
12 ranking after a best of 7.163 seconds at 192.60 mph could be a lot better.
"That was a pretty decent run but there is so much room for improvement,"
Coughlin said. "It's been a hot summer here in Denver and it's supposed to be
hot again tomorrow but I think we run early enough in the day that if we crank
her up we'll be able to move up the ladder. That's the plan."
Coughlin's Jeg's Mail Order Dodge Stratus R/T did get quicker in Friday's
two sessions as he opened Round 1 with a 7.193-second pass at 192.77 mph. The
fact he picked up the pace in the second round, combined with the astonishing
fifth-best run of teammate Richie Stevens, who ran a 7.135, has him anxious
to get back on the racetrack.
"We'll be downloading Richie's data for sure," Coughlin said. "That's the
beauty of a two-car team. Our two Dodge's are set-up the same so [crew chief]
Bob Glidden can take that tune-up and put it in ol' yeller here and we should
be right there with him."
A winner here in 1998 and 1999, Coughlin has yet to earn a trophy with his
new team, Don Schumacher Racing. He'll try to change that Sunday."
