NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - NORTHWEST DIVISION
WOODBURN DRAG STRIP
July 10, 2005

FEDERLIN, AUSTIN TAKE WINS AT WOODBURN

WOODBURN, Ore. - Steve Federlin in Top Alcohol Dragster and
Dennis Taylor in Top Alcohol Funny Car both scored big wins at this
weekend's Les Schwab Tires Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at
Woodburn Drag Strip.
Federlin extended his division points lead while grabbing his
third win of the season with a run of 5.549 seconds at 257.36 mph over
Hillary Will. Will recorded low elapsed time of the event in her
semi-final round with a 5.378 second pass but could not repeat the
performance and slowed to a 5.551 second, 264.08 mph lap in the final
against Federlin out of Oregon City, Ore.
Federlin qualified No. 1 and took out Greg Lawrence of Salem,
Ore., and Joe Windham of Fairfield, Calif., on his way to the final.
Taylor avenged his final round loss to Bucky Austin at last
year's event by taking out the Northwest hitter in the funny car final
with a 5.720 second pass at 246.37 mph. Austin, who has four straight
wins at Woodburn (his last lost was in 2002 against Larry Minor),
crossed the finish line right behind Taylor with a 5.722, 247.79 mph
run.
This is Taylor's second win of the season as he took home the trophy at
the Pacific Division season opener in Phoenix back in March. The win
gives him the Pacific Division Top Alcohol Funny Car point's lead over
second generation driver Steve Gasparrelli.
Woodburn, Ore., racer and local favorite Joe Sorensen kept the
Stock Eliminator trophy from leaving town as he knocked out Mike Lewis
in the final with an 11.724 second pass at 102.45 mph to Lewis' 12.222
at 110.63 mph.
Fellow Woodburn racer Jim Coughlin fell one short of Sorensen
with a red-light foul start to Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., in the
final of Super Stock.
Dave Barcelon of Bremerton, Wash., held off Chuck Smithfield for
his first win ever in Comp Eliminator with an 8.182 second pass at
164.32 mph to Smithfield's 7.608 second, 178.46 mph run in his '68
Beretta.
Stefan Kondolay from Chilliwack, B.C. CAN, beat Val Torres Jr.
on a holeshot for the Super Gas title while Gerry Epp beat Dudley Gee in
a double breakout in Super Street. Both racers ran quicker than the
10.900 second index set for Super Street with Epp being closest to the
index with a 10.877 second run to Gee's 10.853. Jerry Denton joined in
on the fun with a win in Super Comp over Jim Hughes. Denton ran 8.930
seconds to Hughes' 8.921 to win on a holeshot and a 0.004 reaction time
(0.000 is perfect).
In the Sportsman Motorcycle, Steve Pollacheck won over defending
division champion Mark Kosler with an 8.747 second run at 136.90 mph to
Kosler's 9.275, 131.67 and Mark Barnhart won in Top Comp over Marc
Heritage running 7.362 seconds at 181.76 to Heritage's 7.481 at 178.25.
