Cosworth Technology Inc. Takes Flight as MAHLE Powertrain Inc. in North America
NOVI, Mich., July 6 -- Cosworth Technology Inc., an engineering, testing and diagnostics solution provider to the global automotive industry, officially became MAHLE Powertrain Inc., effective July 1.
The acquisition by MAHLE and the name change to MAHLE Powertrain is more than just a formality, however. For the company's Managing Director U.S. Operations, Jonathan Hurden, it signifies a strengthening and an enhancement of capabilities that only a global components supplier like MAHLE can provide.
"Cosworth has long been known for its powertrain engineering expertise and its testing and diagnostics leadership in both North America and in Europe," said Hurden. "We are finding that MAHLE's global reach has not only opened new doors of opportunity for us throughout the world, but it also has made us a stronger, more competitive supplier of technology."
Hurden said this capability will allow MAHLE Powertrain to engineer and develop key components in engine performance, which traditionally have been the domain of automakers. As a result of the acquisition, he said, MAHLE Powertrain has gained the technical expertise to engineer more of the components in engine sub-assemblies such as the cylinder head, which could then be supplied to automakers through the resources of its sister MAHLE divisions.
"The capability to provide engineering and development for larger segments of the engine brings tremendous value to our new organization," Hurden said. "That, coupled with the global representation and sales support from the MAHLE team on other continents provides a synergistic offering that exceeds the sum of the parts."
MAHLE Powertrain is unique in its blend of capabilities, which include powertrain design, development and systems integration, diagnostic engineering services, engine manufacturing and aluminum engine component casting technology, incorporating the patented MAHLE Powertrain Casting Process. The company employs 1,000 people at its offices in Novi, Mich., and Northampton, Wellingborough and Worcester in the United Kingdom.
The MAHLE Group is the leading manufacturer of pistons, engine components and filter systems worldwide. With over 35,000 employees at 65 production locations, MAHLE achieved sales of more than EUR 3.7 billion (4.99 billion USD) in 2004, which makes it one of the 30 largest automobile suppliers worldwide.
