COUNTDOWN TO THE WEST COAST HALL OF FAME ... HAIR, NOT THE MUSICAL

Hippie-Hater Won’t Allow Long Hair on Riverside 500 Drivers.
In the week of hype leading up to the Riverside race (February 2, 1969, Pacific Coast Late Model Race #1, Grand National (Nextel Cup) Combined Event), the following article, partially quoted hereafter, appeared in the Riverside newspaper along with several trade papers. The headline, read: Hippie-Hater Won’t Allow Long Hair on Riverside 500 Drivers.
The Riverside grounds trembled last week as the embodiment of George Wallace’s Alabama country charm, Bill Gazaway, pronounced his ponderous decisions over astounded drivers, mechanics, press personnel, and garage area visitors. Gazaway, Chief NASCAR Grand National Technical Inspector, and self-proclaimed hippie reformer, proclaimed in ponderous rhetoric that “There ain’t going to be no long hair or beards in the Grand National garage area.” The amazed southern California hippie-besieged public tuned in daily for each continuing episode of the Gazaway long hair rebellion, which drew just about as mush attention on the radio and the newspapers as the other events underway at the Riverside Raceway. Gazaway’s intent on having his whole garage area wearing that “I just got a hair cut” look carried his ultimatum a little to the extreme.
NASCAR had a big problem with anything but the white pants, fresh-scrubbed look, and didn’t allow women or other “undesirables” in the pits.
