6 VIE FOR POINT LEAD AS SPRINT CARS INVADE OHIO
JULY 3, 2005
Six drivers are mathematically in the chase for the Valvoline
USAC National Sprint Car point lead this week as the series journeys to a
pair of paved ovals in Ohio. A total of 148 points are up for grabs and
only 134 separate the top six in the standings.
Defending champion Jay Drake leads the title chase to Toledo
and Mansfield for events which showcase both the Sprint Cars and the USAC
National Midgets. A 30-lap Midget and 40-lap Sprint Car feature are on tap
at both Toledo Speedway (Friday night) and Mansfield Motorsports Speedway
(Saturday night).
Friday night's Toledo event marks the first time USAC Midgets
have competed there in 48 years! The last time was June 2, 1957! Former
USAC participants will be included in the pre-race festivities as part of
"Hemelgarn Racing Night" at the 1/2-mile paved oval.
Drake's lead over Dave Darland stands at 14 points, with Levi
Jones just 19 behind Darland.
Drivers will be aiming for Boston Reid's 1-lap track record of
119.641 mph at Toledo, while Drake holds the 1-lap Mansfield record of
120.482 mph.
