BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY
!!! GAINES WINS #2 !!!
JOHN DEMOSS & GARY TRAMMELL WIN #1
BLOOMINGTON, IN (JULY 2, 2005) - The folks who found their way to Bloomington Speedway last night got what may well be the motorsports bargain of the year. There were 40 sprint cars, 40 O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept modifieds, and 30 Tire and Wheel Center super stocks. One hundred and ten race cars and fireworks too. What more could a race fan want.
The fireworks sponsored by Bloomington Power Sports are always a high point of our season. This year's fireworks exceeded even our high expectations. The ooh and aah meters were pegged during the entire performance.
We got a little extra bonus when even more great racers than usual showed up to test themselves against the red clay. Only four cars transferred to the feature from each of the ten car heat races. This is the kind of competition that is remembered for years to come when the bench racing really gets going.
Gaines Wins Second Feature of the Season -
Dick Gaines II was one of the latest qualifiers; but he was still tenth quick. This gave him the fourth place starting position in the second heat race. He went on to win the heat beating out Bryan Clauson, Danny Holtsclaw, and A.J. Anderson. Kent Christian, Dave Darland, and Jon Stanbrough won the other three heats.
When the green flag dropped to start the feature Matt Brun grabbed the lead from his outside from row starting position; and he held it for the first three circuits before losing it to Bobby Stines. However, two laps later, Gaines had taken over second place. Gaines chased Stines until the 17th lap when he managed to get past him to take the lead. Gaines held the point until the checkered flag waved.
A.J. Anderson had been the second fastest qualifier; and he started the feature on the outside of the third row. By the eighth lap Anderson was running third behind Stines and Gaines. It would take until the 22nd lap before Anderson could pass Stines to take second place. Stines was forced to settle for third. Kevin Briscoe, who started the feature next to Gaines, brought the white number five home fourth. Danny Holtsclaw, Brady Short, Jon Stanbrough, Kenny Carmichael, and Josh Cunningham rounded out the top ten.
From the first "B" Feature, Ed Hassler and Casey Shuman transferred to the feature. Fast qualifier Mad Neely, Jason Knoke, and Brandon Petty finished third through fifth respectively; but, for them, glory on the red clay would have to wait for another day. Mitch Cunningham won the second "B" feature; and rookie Brady Short took the final transfer spot. John Scott, Kevin Besecker, and Ty Deckard were the top drivers from the second "B" to fail to transfer. A lot of very good chauffeurs failed to transfer to last night's feature.
John DeMoss Out-duels Groomer In O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept Compention
While John DeMoss has been winning modified features for a long time; however, Ralph Groomer is in only his second year of modified competition. However, Groomer has been a strong competitor from the first time that he climbed into a modified. Of course, he was pretty familiar with the red clay of Bloomington Speedway from his days in th Tire & Wheel Center super stock division. It was clear from the time that he climbed into the modffed that he was going to be a major factor in the modified points race.
When the green flag dropped to start the modified feature, Groomer jumped into the lead; but DeMoss was right on his tail. On the fifth circuit the wily DeMoss found his way past Groomer; and he would lead all the way to the checkered flags. However, DeMoss was never very far ahead of the tenacious Groomer. Together, DeMoss and Groomer provided the Bloomington Speedway fans with a tremendous show.
It wasn't like they were the whole show either. For much of the race it was a four way battle including Ray Humphrey and Jesse Cramer.. Then Lee Hobbs moved into the mix. When the checkered flag waved, it was Cramer, Hobbs, Clint DeMoss Gary Barrow, Ryan Thomas, Matt Boknecht, Matt Bex, and Steve Ott following John DeMoss and Ralph Groomer across the finish line.
In preliminary action Ryan Thomas, Ralph Groomer, Ray Humphrey, and John DeMoss won the heat races. In the first "B" feature, Greg Deckard came from mid-pack to win while Rodney Harris, Jr. came from outside of the second row to take the final transfer spot. In the second "B" feature, Matt Boknecht took the last two transfers to the feature.
Gary Trammell Takes Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock Feature -
There is probably no driver who has been as successful in as many different classes as Gary Trammell. Gary has won sprint car races (and a championship), modified races, and super stock races. Friday night Gary did it all right. He won his heat, won the dash, and he led all but one lap of the feature. Fortunately for Trammell, the lap that he missed was the fourth, not the 25th.
Jeremy Hines started the Tire & Wheel Center super stock feature ninth. On the fifth lap he was sixth. On the sixth lap he was fifth. On the seventh lap, he was fourth; and on the tenth lap he took third. On the 21st lap, Hines moved into second. During the closing laps, Hines was one bad move on Trammell's part away from the lead; but Trammell didn't make that bad move. Hines had to settle for second.
Ben DuBois was just a little off of the pace and had to settle for a third place finish. Randy Howe, Terry Arthur, Anthony Walker, Kevin Arthur, Travis Howe, and points leader Danny Harris made up the balance of the top ten.
In preliminary action, Randy Howe, Chris Hillman, and Trammell won the heat races while Trammell took the Dash. Travis Howe prevailed in the "B" feature.
