SHIELDS, GORDON SET THE PACE AT INFINEON RACEWAY'S 

NHRA LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE

            SONOMA, Calif. - In the first rounds of qualifying at the Team
Superstores NHRA Summer Nationals, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series, Las Vegas' Duane Shields drove his Top Alcohol Dragster to the No. 1
qualifying spot while in Top Alcohol Funny Car, the defending division
champion Doug Gordon of Paso Robles, Calif., took the top spot.

            Shields made a 5.419-second, 263.72 mph pass to put him ahead of
Shelton, Wash., racer Brandon Johnson.  Johnson ran 5.464 seconds at 258.42
mph.  Gordon ran 5.752 seconds at 250.09 mph to set the pace ahead of Dennis
Taylor of Anaheim Hills, Calif., who ran 5.764 seconds at 247.34 mph.

            There were 16 cars in both the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top
Alcohol Funny Car classes vying for a spot in the eight-car qualifying field
for each class.  More entries could come in on Saturday.

            The division's Top Alcohol Dragster points leader, Chris Demke
of Sunland, Calif., was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital after
his car went out of control just before half-track.  Demke is the reigning
division champion and has won the division's first three events.

Local favorite, John Chamberlin of Napa, Calif., led the Comp Eliminator
field and a pair of Modesto, Calif., residents set the pace in their
respective classes: Harry Holton is No. 1 in Super Stock and Don Wann leads
Stock Eliminator.  Tracy, Calif., racer Paul Gladden is in the top spot in
Top Comp.

            Racing continues at Infineon Raceway with final qualifying and
time trials Saturday and eliminations Sunday.  Gates open at 7 a.m. both
days.  Qualifying and time trials begin at 8:15 a.m. Saturday.   Top Alcohol
Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m.  Eliminations
start Sunday at 8:15 a.m. and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car
eliminations start at noon.

Tickets are $20 both days.  Children 12 and under are admitted free.  For
