Mike Savage Hangs Tough at Crandon

June 27, 2005
Williamsburg, MI

Crandon International Raceway is home to Round 5 & 6 of the 2005 Lucas Oil CORR series. The long time sponsor, the Forest County Potawatomi Casino ensures that everyone, from the fans to the competitors, has the best possible experience throughout the entire weekend.

Mike Savage and his #267 Savage Construction Kumho Tire Ford F-150 have been having a very good season with consistent top-5 finishes. The team knew that the Crandon track is considered a horsepower track, which meant the team would be hard pressed to stay in the front pack.

Round 5
The land rush start found Mike in the back of the pack coming out of the first turn. As the laps went by, Mike did whatever he could to pass the competition. With three laps to go, Mike had made it to fourth place. At the finish it was Baudoux in first, Hoek in second, Wandasega in third, and Mike Savage in fourth.

Round 6
Similar to Round 5 Mike started the race almost last coming out of turn one. As the last went by, Mike found himself in fifth place. The four trucks in front of him definitely had more horsepower. Without someone making a mistake or breaking, there wasn’t any way to gain on the top 4 drivers. At the finish, Mike came home in fifth place.

“ Crandon is all about horsepower, the guys that finished in front of us this weekend all have a better engine program. Even with our limited budget, my guys find ways for us to get towards the front-runners. I’m really proud of everybody that helps us out. The next race in Topeka is a short and very technical layout. This helps even out the trucks. Getting the truck to handle the dropoffs, jumps, and whoops that the clay track offers is key. Last year we ran at the front for much of the weekend. We know we can be successful.” – Mike Savage.

After six of twelve rounds of racing Mike Savage still sits third overall in the 2005 Lucas Oil CORR Sportsman 2 division.

Next Race - July 8-9, the Toyo Tires Off-Road Championships at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas.
