Chip Ellis exits in opening round
MADISON, Ill. (June 26, 2005) - After qualifying the G Squared/S&S Buell
in the No. 4 position for the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals, Chip
Ellis' foul gave the opening round elimination win to Michael Phillips.
By 25 thousandths of a second, Ellis, who tried to gain an advantage at
the green light, turned the Christmas tree red indicating that he left
the starting line to soon. In the process he recorded a run of 7.206
seconds to 7.278 seconds for Phillips, but the red-light foul start gave
the win to his opponent.
"We're very disappointed," said George Smith, who along with George
Bryce owns G Squared Motorsports. "This team worked hard and as result
we had a good tune up for eliminations after struggling some throughout
the weekend, but you have to have green lights to win.
"As we continue to evaluate and develop the S&S powerplant for the NHRA
Pro Stock Motorcycle class, it's obvious that our longevity testing is
proving that the motors are holding together real well. The engine we
are currently using, serial number 14, now has 53 runs on it with the
same crankshaft, cylinders and pistons."
On behalf of G Squared, Bryce thanked Doc's Harley Davidson for their
support this weekend. "While we continue to search for a primary
marketing partner for the G Squared/S&S Buell, we want to thank Doc's
Harley Davidson for their support here in St. Louis. Hopefully, the
exposure they received throughout the weekend will bring new customers
to their facilities in Kirkwood, Mo."
After seven of 15 events for Pro Stock Motorcycle, Ellis is now No. 6 in
the POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle point standings with 402 points.
NEXT RACE: After five races in seven weeks the Pro Stock Motorcycles and
the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series take some time off. Next up on the
schedule for all four professional classes (TF, FC, PS and PSM) is the
Mopar Mile-High Nationals, July 15-17, at Bandimere Speedway, near Denver
TELEVISION: ESPN2 will air three hours of same-day television coverage
of eliminations beginning at 9 p.m. this evening (Sunday, June 26). The
elimination show encores on the "Deuce" early Tuesday morning, June 28,
from 3 until 4:30 a.m. Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and
subject to change at anytime. Check local listings.
G SQUARED MOTORSPORTS: When Harley Davidson accelerated their effort in
NHRA, S&S Cycle decided in 2002 to join the battle. Because of his vast
R&D experience, coupled with his racing background, S&S asked George
Smith to head their project to field a competitive S&S V-Twin bike on
the NHRA circuit. Smith immediately asked George Bryce, who had been
working with S&S Cycle on a similar project, to join the new endeavor
and G Squared Motorsports was formed in 2003. Both Smith and Bryce knew
if they collaborated on the project, joining the resources, knowledge
and talents of S&S and Star Racing, they could produce a competitive
bike to race in Pro Stock Motorcycle competition on the NHRA POWERade
Drag Racing Series. The G Squared/S&S-powered V-Twin Buell debuted in 2004.
