GMAC / Trenton Forging #5 GTO Cleveland Post Race Report
Hayner Rocks In Cleveland… Team Enjoys its First Top Five
Cleveland – June 26, 2005 Starting 10th on the grid, the #5 GMAC
Commercial Finance / Trenton Forging GTO, driven by Stu Hayner,
finished 5th in today’s SPEED World Challenge GT race at Cleveland’s
Burke Lakefront Airport. The SPEED World Challenge Series ran as part
of the Grand Prix of Cleveland along with the Champ Car Series.
“This is just a great accomplishment for the team,” said a jubilant
Hayner. “It’s not a win… but it sure feels like one. Everyone has
been working so hard to get to this point… this is a good day.”
At the start, Hayner found himself smack in the middle of the first
turn pile-up but managed to wiggle his way through the trouble spots.
The incident sent outside pole sitter, Lou Gigliotti, in and out of
pit lane for the rest of day and pole sitter, Max Papis, to the back
of the back. Wolf Henzler, who started third, was left at the side of
the track.
“I’ve raced here enough to anticipate turn one,” remarked Hayner.
“And, knowing some of the guys up there, I figured it end up the way
it did. It’s a kind of mixed deal, you can’t lay back… so you stay
alert and pick your way through the mess. That’s what we did.”
“The car was pretty strong early on,” Hayner continued. “We had some
good racing with one of the McCann Vipers and went back and forth
with Jim Sofronas’ Porsche. The car is definitely coming together and
getting to where we can start the weekend with a solid baseline setup.”
“I’m really happy for our team owner, David Moxlow,” added Stu. “His
commitment to this program is, and continues to be, unwavering.
Obviously we’ve had our challenges, but this… I think we feel we’ve
turned a corner. This was just great!”
Hayner’s finish continues his top 5 finishes at the Grand Prix of
Cleveland. In his last Trans-Am appearance, Hayner came from last
place passing the entire field, including the race leader, to finish
the day in 5th. It was a remarkable drive that had the Cleveland fans
on their feet.
The Cleveland Grand Prix schedule called for the SPEED Touring Car
race to run on Saturday at 5:45pm and the GT race to run Sunday at
4pm. The Touring Car race aired Sunday at 4pm and the GT race ran one-
hour tape delay at 5pm, on SPEED.
