FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
!!! KELLY KINSER WINS !!!
HOBBS & HILLMAN SCORE TOO
BLOOMINGTON, IN (June 25, 2005) - For the first time in a couple of years winged sprint cars raced on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. The fans turned out in big numbers; and Mother Nature cooperated by providing us with an ideal night to go racing. It was admittedly pretty warm when the fans started arriving and staking out their preferred vista for the evenings racing. However, as the sun dropped lower in the sky, temperatures began to moderate and conditions became near perfect for the assembled race fans.
Kelly Kinser Wins In Front of His Home Town Crowd -
Winged sprint car racing has pretty much become the province of traveling like the World of Outlaws, the All Star Circuit of Champions, and the Mid-American Sprint Series (MASS). To give the Bloomington Speedway fans a little variety, Mike Miles attempts to schedule at least one winged race each season. This season he chose the Mid-American Sprint Series. After the show that they gave our fans, it was clear that Mike had made a good choice.
The home town favorite was, of course, Kelly Kinser. Kelly has become a real rarity in the world of winged sprint car racing - a racer with a day job. There are hundreds of non winged sprint car racers who race on the weekends and hold down a regular job during the week. However, few winged sprint car racers operate that way. Most winged races are either veterans who have figured out how to pay the bills with their sprint cars or young drivers who are trying to prove that they can make a career out of racing. Of course, they hope to catch the eye of Roger Penske, Chip Ganassi, Jack Roush, etc. who they hope will them a ticket to the world of private jets and million dollar motor coaches. Most of the latter group, of course, spend a lot of money figuring out that the holy grail is not all that accessable. They then either find a series within their means and race for fun or they give it all up for golf and bass fishing. Kelly is apparently more adroit than most of his fellows and is able to race and win on the weekends and still work.
It may well be that Kelly could have made a successful career in winged sprint car racing but simply didn't want to live out of a suitcase ten months a year. In any event, Kelly is a favorite to win anytime the 4K rolls off of the trailer. And, when he makes a rare appearance on the red clay, he has a little extra incentive.
Kelly had a little trouble in qualifying; but, after that, the night pretty much belonged to Kelly. He won his heat race and followed that up by winning his dash to earn a front row starting position for the feature. When the green flag dropped on the feature, Critter Malone, who was making a rare winged appearance, jumped into the lead. Critter led the first eleven laps. However, on the 12th lap they found themselves in traffic; and Kelly's many years of experience paid off in a big way as he slipped by Critter into the lead.
Cameron Dodson has been making a name for himself in winged sprint car racing on pavement; and last night he proved that he can do pretty well on dirt as well. He clawed his way from a mid-pack starting position to a strong second place finish.
Todd Kelly, Critter Malone, and Brad Sweet made up the balance of the top five.
Leading up to the big feature Marty Perovich of Sidney Australia who was making his first visit to Bloomington Speedway set quick time. Jared Fox, Kelly Kinser, and Cameron Dodson won the heat races while Critter Malone and Kelly Kinser took the dashes. Chad Blonde got upside down in his heat race; but he rallied to win the "B" feature.
Hillman Powers to Super Stock Feature Win -
Thirteen was a luck number for Chris Hillman last night. It had obviously not been a perfect night for Chris Hillman last night. If it had been, he probably wouldn't have been starting 13th in the feature. Hillman's last feature win at Bloomington Speedway came just over a year ago on June 11, 2004. It is almost certain that he felt that he was long overdue for another win; however, it is also likely that, after he took the final transfer spot from his heat race, he felt like the odds were against him getting that next win last night.
Greg Amick won his heat race and then took the Tire & Wheel Center super stock dash. It looked like he was well on his way to winning his first Bloomington Speedway feature event. He led the first 22 laps before giving up the lead to Hillman. Kent Robinson moved around Amick into second place on the 24th circuit; but he had nothing for Hillman.
Amick held on to finish third ahead of Ben DuBois and Terry Arthur.
In preliminary Tire & Wheel Center super stock action Terry Arthur, Roy Bruce, Jr., and Greg Amick won the heat races while Ben DuBois won the "B" feature.
Hobbs Wins O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept. Feature -
Lee Hobbs was the 2002 O'Neal Wood Products/Monroe County Pizza Dept. champion; however, the first race of the 2003 season was his last modified feature win. To say that Lee was ready for another Bloomington Speedway win would be one of the world's biggest understatements. However, last night was his night; and his win came at the end of one of the best races of season so far.
Jesse Cramer, Ray Humphrey, Matt Boknecht, and Jim Hume started their evening by winning their heat races. Jesse Cramer won the dash to earn the right to start the feature on the pole. Shelby Miles won the "B" feature and the stage was set for one of the best features ever for the modified division.
When the green flag dropped to start the feature, it looked like it might turn out to be a battle to the end between two of the best modified chauffeurs around. Jesse Cramer and Ray Humphrey were starting side by side on the front row. Humphrey's car smoked heavily in each corner; but it didn't seem to slow him down much. As if that weren't enough power up front, Matt Boknecht and Jim Hume were right behind them.
Humphrey led the first lap; but Cramer took the lead on the second circuit and held it until the 20th lap. Lee Hobbs started eighth; but at the end of the second lap he was running fifth. On the fourth lap he passed Gary Barrow for fourth. Three laps later he went past Matt Boknecht to take third. On the 13th lap he slipped past Humphrey to take second. From that point on, it was Cramer, Hobbs, Boknecht and Humphrey in a clustered. The advantage passed from one to another; but it was certain that it was still anybody's race. On the 24th lap Hobbs took the lead again. And, as they crossed the finish line, Matt Boknecht passed Cramer and took second place by a matter of inches. It's hard to remember a feature in which the first four cars ran so close together for so long.
