CHEVROLET SILVERADO DOMINATES AT MILWAUKEE

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES
MILWAUKEE MILE
POST RACE NOTES AND QUOTES
JUNE 24, 2005,

DENNIS SETZER WINS TWO IN A ROW – TAKES POINT LEAD
JACK SPRAGUE FINISHES SECOND, RON HORNADAY FINISHES FOURTH
MILWAUKEE, WI – After claiming his first pole of 2005, tying the existing
track record to the number, Jack Sprague led the 36-truck field to the green
flag in tonight’s Toyota Tundra Milwaukee 200 at the famed Milwaukee Mile.
Sprague held the point in the No. 16 Chevy Trucks Silverado for the first 43
circuits of the 200 lap, 200 mile NASCAR Craftsman Truck race before
relinquishing the top spot to Dennis Setzer. From that point forward, Setzer set a
blistering pace only to lose the lead for three laps during green flag stops
from laps 82 – 85 and again on lap 145 after pitting when the race’s only
caution flew.
It is the fifth consecutive win for Silverado in the NCTS, seventh of the
season and the second in a row for Setzer and the No. 46 Morgan Dollar
Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado team. The victory catapulted Setzer to the lead in
the series point standings, 35 points in front of second place Bobby
Hamilton. Chevrolet Silverado is also leading the manufacturer championship battle.
Ron Hornaday brought the No. 6 GM Goodwrench Silverado to the checkered in
fourth position, the last truck on the lead lap.
David Starr finished 11th in the No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Silverado.
Hornaday sits fourth in the standings, 121 points out of the lead. Sprague
jumped to seventh in the point chase, 186 down to Setzer. Starr remained in
10th spot, 242 behind the leader.
The next event for the NCTS is the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas
Speedway on July 2nd. Practice and qualifying will be held on Friday, July 1, 2005
with the 167 lap, 250 mile race scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m.
Live television coverage will be provided by SPEED Channel with MRN and XM
Satellite bringing the race live on the air waves.
DENNIS SETZER, NO 46 CHEVROLET Z71 SILVERADO, QUALIFIED 3RD, FINISHED 1ST:
“We didn’t know for sure what we were going to have during the first
practice. Eric Phillips (crew chief) worked really hard on this Silverado during
that practice. Randy Goss from Chevrolet came over and said that we needed to
roll better in the center. So that is what we worked on. We were just a little
free in and a little free off but our Chevrolet Silverado was just awesome
tonight. This is just a team I drive for, they are awesome.
“I didn’t have any heat problems, my feet are fine. My guys build these
trucks awesome and with working the brake like you do here at Milwaukee, your
feet keep moving all the time.?? MORE TO COME.
JACK SPRAGUE, NO 16 CHEVY TRUCKS SILVERADO, QUALIFIED 1ST, FINISHED 2ND: “
Dennis (Setzer, race winner) had us covered tonight. He was just better than
us. His Silverado was better than our Silverado. I was just tight in the
middle. Tight, tight, tight. Couldn’t get it out. We got it a little bit then
I got loose off. On fresh tires I could catch him a little bit, but he had
us beat, he had us and everyone else covered. Congratulations to Dennis and
his team. That is two in a row for him. I really wanted to win this race,
but if I had to finish second, he certainly is the one I would want to finish
second to. Second is not bad. Another race without a scratch. We did what
we could do.
“I don’t think more adjustments were going to get it. I know what he had
in his truck for setup and it is working for him. My Chevy Trucks Silverado
was pretty awesome, but his was a little more awesome than mine was. He
could just get through the center a little quicker than I could, especially on
old tires. We got it so I could get across center but then I got loose off.
Thanks to Chevrolet and all the sponsors on board that support this program.??
MORE TO COME
DAVID STARR, NO 75 SPEARS MANUFACTURING SILVERADO, QUALIFIED 7TH, FINISHED
11TH: “Not a bad finish tonight in the No. 75 Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet
Silverado. We struggled in practice and we struggled…McCarty (Dave, crew
chief) worked his magic and we had a decent qualifying run. Just tight all
night long – tight in the center couldn’t get back in the gas like we needed
to. We needed to rotate real smooth and we had to wait on it. It seemed like
the truck was stopping in the center before we could get back on the gas.
“Little disappointed, an 11th place finish - almost a top-10 finish. We
are still working and have a lot of work to do we’re not giving up this Spears
Chevrolet Silverado Team were not going to give up we are just going to keep
on working and keep working until we get closer to the front. We’re a little
disappointed with the finish but we will take it and keep on truckin.??
MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 15 EARL SMALL’S HARLEY DAVIDSON SILVERADO, QUALIFIED
24TH, FINISHED 19TH: “Those long green runs at the beginning killed us
tonight in the race. We weren’t very good to start and we had to pit and unhook
the rear bar to be half way decent. We got the No. 15 Earl Small Harley
Davidson Chevrolet Silverado good but by then we were already two or three laps
down after pitting under green. I didn’t do too great of a job but I had a
great time in the Billy Ballew Motorsports NASCAR Craftsman Truck tonight and
maybe they’ll have me back to give it another chance.??
RON HORNADAY, NO. 6 GM GOODWRENCH SILVERADO, QUALIFIED 8TH, FINISHED 4TH: “
I couldn’t even see the guys up front, I saw Jack a couple of times. I had a
few good laps and got going but traffic out there was just terrible. They
could slow you down a half a second a lap. We did everything we could. We
were running Ted (Musgrave) down for a while but then I over shot the corner and
screwed up the tires. All in all to come out of here with top four finish
isn’t bad. Wally (Rogers, crew chief) and everyone on the GM Goodwrench team
did an awesome job tonight. It is a good points night for us, which is good.
It was just kind of a strange race to have only one yellow. We could have
used a couple more cautions for adjustments but I am sure so could have a lot of
other guys. Good night for Chevrolet so we will take this and head on out
for Kansas.??
JACK SPRAGUE, NO 16 CHEVY TRUCKS SILVER POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE: “We
just didn’t have enough for Dennis tonight. Running up on the No. 23 (early in
the race) didn’t have anything to do with it. We just didn’t have enough for
him tonight. He was definitely better than we were and I wasn’t going to race
him with anything but respect. When he first got to me, I knew he was a
little bit better than me and I was going to let him go but then he dropped
back just a little. I don’t know if he was getting a little aero tight behind
me or what, but he also is very smart, and he isn’t going to get impatient and
do something stupid. I just didn’t have enough; we couldn’t quite get it
done. But like I said, if I have to finish second, he is the guy I want to
finish second to.
“We pretty much annihilated everyone else. If Dennis wasn’t here, I would
have looked pretty good (said in jest-chuckles) but he was here. It was
pretty evident we had the best trucks tonight and I am pretty proud of that for
our teams and Chevrolet. I could keep him in my sights but I couldn’t get to
him. I just couldn’t do a think with Dennis, he could get about a half of
straight ahead of me and I couldn’t see third so I knew I was ok there. I was
just trying everything I could try on the track, but couldn’t find a place
where I was any faster.
“Congratulations to Dennis, his team owner David Dollar and their whole
team. That truck was awesome through the middle.
“More cautions wouldn’t have made any real difference with our truck. We
wouldn’t have been able to get much more out of our truck. If it was anyone
else but Dennis, I could have hit him on the restart (chuckles, said in jest)
but I couldn’t hit him.
“Tonight it was a good track for Chevrolet. I have four poles here and one
win. One year I was leading with a ½ to ¾ lap lead and yellow came out for a
bungee cord on the track with five laps to go and lost that one. But have
been close here several times.
“But I think the guys who are always good here through the years, ran good
tonight. Musgrave has won races here and he finished third. Hornaday has one
here and he finished fourth. I don’t know if Setzer has won here before but
he has run good here before and he won here. I think the guys that run good
on flat miles ran good here tonight. It was pretty slippery out there
tonight and guys that run good on slippery race tracks ran good. I don’t know how
we ended up with only four trucks on the lead lap, we must have been lapping
them under green because we didn’t have any yellows to speak of, unless
someone got in trouble in the pits, I don’t know how we did it. But it was a good
night.??
DENNIS SETZER, RACE WINNERS PRESS CONFERENCE: “We appreciate the
opportunity to be in this NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Chevrolet fully sponsors
this Morgan Dollar team and us gets us where we can put these Silverado’s out
here and be competitive every week. We didn’t make any adjustments tonight I
don’t think. I was just a little loose in the corners all night through the
center. We stayed about the same all night. Our truck started out great and
never changed during the race. It seemed to be a little bit better on older
tires then some of the trucks were and it paid off with some dividends for
us. It was perfect for us when the caution came out- we had our first stop
around lap 80 and I think the caution came out around lap 120. Everyone was
thinking about coming in, pitting again and putting four tires on to go the rest
of the way. When you are a crew chief and you have a pretty dominant truck
it’s really easy to make a decision. Our guys gave me a great pit stop and
we got right back out front.
“We started behind Sprague and followed him for a while until we could get
by him. We got a couple of sprinkles and could see the lightning off of turn
three but the weather never affected the track. I love racing here at night
– it’s a great facility and I had fun racing here and hope the fans enjoyed
it as much as the competitors – especially when it’s under the lights.
“It was pretty awesome – we kept getting better as our tires worn and we
were really consistent – I’m not a speed demon on qualifying runs but set up
for the race and it really seems to be paying big dividends for us. We caught
Sprague in some traffic there and were able to slide by him. We were real
cautious in the lapped traffic out there. When you have a truck that good you
can’t do something stupid.??
