AAA Texas: Weekend Gas Watch; The Price of Crude Pushes Gas Prices Higher
HOUSTON--June 24, 2005--Retail gasoline prices skyrocketed this week as crude oil prices jumped to record levels, according to AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch. The Texas average price for regular self-serve increased four cents to $2.101 a gallon -- seven cents shy of the all-time record high of $2.175 a gallon.
Motorists in Corpus Christi are paying the cheapest at $2.046 a gallon -- nearly a seven cents increase in only a week. Dallas has the highest average at $2.126 a gallon -- four cents higher.
"The price of crude tipped the scale above $59 a barrel this week, setting a new record high," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "The sustained upward direction in crude oil prices is of course driving gasoline prices higher. If the price of crude pushes beyond $60 a barrel and stays there, a fresh run at new record high gas prices will occur."
The national average for regular self-serve gasoline is $2.180 a gallon -- up four cents in one week.
AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline at popular destinations for automobile trips.
