Littelfuse Revises Second Quarter Sales and Earnings Expectations
DES PLAINES, Ill.--June 22, 2005--Littelfuse, Inc. today announced revised sales and earnings expectations for the second quarter of 2005. Sales for the second quarter, which previously were expected to increase approximately 8% sequentially, are now expected to be roughly flat with first quarter 2005 sales of $122 million. Earnings for the second quarter, which previously were expected to be in the range of $0.28 to $0.32 per diluted share, are now expected to be in the range of $0.18 to $0.20 per share."While the strong book-to-bill trend which began in early April has continued, we have not seen the upturn in shipments that we were expecting," said Gordon Hunter, Chief Executive Officer. "Electronic distributor sales in North America and China remain weak as do global telecom sales. After a relatively strong April, automotive sales have also weakened in both North America and Europe. On the other hand, we are currently seeing positive trends in our electrical business in North America and in digital electronics in Southeast Asia and Taiwan," added Hunter.
"With lower than expected sales, margins are not benefiting from the operating leverage that we expected. Increasing commodity prices, higher fuel surcharges on freight and most recently, the weakening dollar, have also negatively impacted margins," said Phil Franklin, Vice President, Operations Support and Chief Financial Officer. "With the current uncertainty and low visibility in our electronics markets, we will continue to take cost out of the business over the next several quarters."
