Capps drives to 10th place in E-town qualifying

DON SCHUMACHER RACING
2005 NHRA POWERade DRAG RACING SERIES
Round 11 of 23
K&N FILTERS SUPERNATIONALS
OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP RACEWAY PARK
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J.
Race Dates: June 17-19, 2005

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 18, 2005) - Ron Capps, in the Brut Dodge Stratus
Funny Car, posted three consistent passes (4.887/307.16, 4.842/315.42 in the
first two rounds and a 4.833/318.24 in the final session) plus a
4.932/275.51 in the third to qualify No. 10 for the K&N Filters
SuperNationals in Englishtown, N.J.

On Friday, while crew chief Ed McCulloch made a visit to the local hospital,
the rest of the Don Schumacher Racing brain trust (crew chiefs Dan Olson,
Mike Neff and Todd Okuhara) pitched in. "On Friday, we were without Ace,"
said Capps, "so as a team everybody just came together really well.

"We ran an .84 on Friday. The first run on Saturday (with Ace back in the
camp) I actually shut if off down track, and it was still one of the
top-five runs of the session. We shut it off real early because it started
to spin the tires. So we knew we had a good car. It was just a matter of
letting the track cool down and going for it in the last run.

"We know why it smoked the tires on Saturday. That's going to be a great
race-day setup. And in the last session (in the fifth pair) we were in the
top three at the end. We didn't feel like the run was very good when we got
back and compared it to how we thought guys could run behind us.

"Ace races the race track and, you ever know, behind us some of those guys
once in a while throw down a good one, but the Brut Dodge just did a great
job getting down the quarter-mile. We got back and listened to the rest of
the session on the radio and nobody really stepped up, so we feel like we're
right in the ballgame."

Capps faces Tony Pedregon in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
