Mosport Int'l Raceway: Qualifying Summary & Grid
Gibbons grabs the pole for the Berms R Us presents the Clarington 200
CASCAR Super Series race at Mosport Int'l Raceway
OSHAWA, ON - A pair of qualifying sessions took place at Mosport Int'l
Raceway on Saturday afternoon to set the starting grid for Sunday
afternoon's 'Berms-R-Us presents the Clarington 200' CASCAR Super Series
race. Peter Gibbons who won this event in 1999, 2000 and 2003 set the
fastest time in the first session and it held up throughout the second to
earn him his second consecutive Super Series pole position.
Gibbons' Canadian Tire Chevrolet lapped the 10-turn, 2.459-mile
Mosport road course in one-minute and 26.183 seconds to establish a new
CASCAR qualifying record. That translated into an average lap speed of
165.290 km/h.
Four-time and reigning Super Series National champion Don Thomson
posted the best time of the second session, but it wasn't enough to bump
Gibbons from the top of the combined session speed chart. The Home Hardware
Chevy driver's best effort was 1:26.515, which will place him alongside of
Gibbons on the front row to start Sunday's 51-lap feature race.
Starting third will be Thomson's sophomore teammate, J.R.
Fitzpatrick, driver of the #84 Cambridge Rigging Chevrolet. Last year's
runner-up in the Rookie of the Year chase attended a road racing school
during the off-season and it paid off during qualifying today at Mosport.
Fitzpatrick will start beside St-Eustache Super Series race winner
Kerry Micks. The Power Water Taurus driver is a talented road racer and he
will be a threat on Sunday. Current points leader Ron Beauchamp Jr. will
line up sixth in his MOPAR / Exide / Mobil 1 Dodge Charger, just behind
last year's Mosport road course race winner Jeff Lapcevich (Fastline / Tim
Horton's / EMCEA Transport Chevrolet Monte Carlo).
In all, 33 drivers qualified for the 'Berms-R-Us presents the
Clarington 200'. The green flag is scheduled to fly at 2 p.m. The CASCAR
Power Water Sportsman Series opens its 2005 racing season this evening at
the Mosport Speedway half-mile oval.
