NHRA Warren Johnson Friday Update: WJ Opens Englishtown
Qualifying in Third
Event: 36th Annual NHRA SuperNationals
Day/Date: Friday, June 17, 2005
Location: Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, Englishtown, New Jersey
Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Pontiac Racing Team
continued their run of solid performances during Friday's opening
qualifying sessions for the NHRA SuperNationals, posting a 6.702-second,
206.20 mph pass on their second attempt to position themselves in the
third position midway through qualifying.
With two attempts remaining on Saturday, Johnson immediately focused on
how to further improve his standing.
"After tying Kurt (Johnson's son, who is the No. 1 qualifier at the
qualifying midpoint) for the quickest time to 60 feet, we lost 17
thousandths to the 330-foot mark on our second run, after which we
starting working our way back. Even so, we're pleased with today's
performance. After all, our GM Performance Parts Grand Am was the
quickest car in its lane in each of the two sessions.
"We'll see what Mother Nature brings us for tomorrow and work from
there. We have a few issues in the tune-up to work on, but overall,
we're in good shape."
