Rob Bunker - Indianapolis preview

Rob Bunker returns to his roots this week, looking for intensity. He'll be
in the right place, competing in two Formula BMW USA races at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway, sharing the race weekend with the Formula One
World Championship. Bunker, who resides in Bridgewater, N.J., has long
dreamed of racing on the 2.605-mile road course.

 

"I've been here enough times, both in my head and physically, that I have
pretty good references to the whole entire track. I come into these races
thinking in the same respect that this is like my home track [because] this
is my family's home town," Bunker noted. "We started going a few years back,
just watching F1. It was something we loved to do. Starting last year, when
BMW started coming to North America, it was an even more realistic goal."

 

Bunker has shown progressively more speed in each Formula BMW race this
season. He moved up nine positions in the last race, in Montréal, to finish
fifth. He wants to be even stronger in Indianapolis.

 

"A big thing we want to work on is to get the intensity up, right out of the
pit, take advantage of every opportunity that we can get. We've shown we can
race; now we have to show we can race up front. We've had good preparation
and, with the good performance last weekend, we've got the right mindset to
win," he said.

 

"It's a turning point of the season. Last year, the same thing happened – by
race four, the races started coming to us. That's important, that little
extra bit of momentum."

 

Bunker's No. 18 AIM Autosport Formula BMW FB2 will carry the colors of his
new sponsor, ThruPoint, a New York-based network consulting company. Bunker
noted his father Chip and the company's founder, Rami Musallam, "share the
same respect for speed".

 

The Formula BMW races are scheduled for Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June
19.
