ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 15, 2005) - Almost halfway into the NHRA POWERade
Drag Racing season, Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts team head to
the northeast for the 36th annual K&N Filters SuperNationals presented by
Advance Auto Parts. The 11th race of the NHRA schedule will be held this
weekend at the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
The Garden State track brings back good memories to the former champion. The
Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car driver recalls his first win as a Funny
Car owner and driver in 2000. Pedregonıs team wasnıt favored, but he was
able to knock off reigning champion John Force in the finals of a
tire-smoking, throttle pedaling race.
³I have a special place in my heart for Englishtown because it was there
where we got our first race win as an owner/driver,” Pedregon said. “It’s
definitely a race we’re looking forward to, and Advance Auto Parts
involvement as a presenting sponsor of the event makes it even more special.
It can be a great track if the weather is cool, but like any other track,
when you get some sunshine on it, it will make the crew chiefs sweat a
little bit.
“There is no doubt that Old Bridge Township Raceway Park has been good to
me,² Pedregon added. ³We’ve always been able to put up a set up that worked
for the track. I enjoy going there not only because of the success I’ve had
but because it’s a great facility. The Napp family has done a wonderful job
with this track. They are a great family and one of the premier track owners
and operators on this circuit. We’re hoping to continue the streak of
success we’ve had there this weekend”.
Pedregon has qualified sixth or better at 11 of the events on this track,
earning the top qualifier award at two of those (’92, ’98) with an overall
average qualifying start of fourth. He’s earned two victories (’95, ’00) and
a runner up finish (’99). He has also advanced to the semifinals a total of
three times.
The event in Englishtown is second in a series of a three races in a row.
Drivers and crew chiefs know that racing weekend after weekend presents a
set of challenges and pressures on crew and car.
“Back-to-back races mean a lot of work. Teams need to go into those races
with extra cylinder heads, blocks, and crankshafts… All those things you
can’t exactly have shipped overnight if needed,” explained Pedregon.
Pedregon is pleased with the direction his Advance Auto Parts team is going
in terms of tune-ups and improving performances. After last weekends race in
Joliet, Ill. Pedregon heads to Englishtown in fifth place in NHRA Nitro
Funny Car points with 539.
