Cadillac brings back podium-sweeping trio
Angelelli joins Papis and Pilgrim for Grand Prix of Cleveland
DETROIT, MI - Cadillac announced today that Max Angelelli will rejoin its CTS-V race team to compete in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT race in Cleveland on June 26.
Angelelli will drive the #12 CTS-V, teaming with Andy Pilgrim and fellow Italian Max Papis in the trio of black Cadillacs. The last and only time the trio took to the track together resulted in a 1-2-3 finish at Road Atlanta. Angelelli led most of that race before having gear selection problems, finishing third behind Papis and Pilgrim.
Cadillac currently leads the SPEED GT Manufacturer's Championship, and Andy Pilgrim is just eight points away from leading the Driver's Championship. Angelelli currently is co-points leader in another racing series in his Pontiac-powered Daytona Prototype.
Max Papis comes to Cleveland fresh off his run at the 24- Hours of Le Mans with Corvette Racing in the C6-R and his co-drivers Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell. Papis has raced at the Burke Lakefront Airport track 6 times in Champ Car including time behind the wheel of Bobby Rahal's cars. With that team based in nearby Columbus, Max retains a strong following with media and fans in the area.
"Cleveland has always been one of my favorite race tracks - it is fun and the community really supports the event." said Papis. "The course has many of the same characteristics as Sebring - a concrete surface and bumpy near the apexes. With mostly medium-speed corners and nothing too tight, the handling of our CTS-V race cars should hopefully shine, and I expect our Cadillacs to do well."
Papis' track knowledge could be a significant advantage, as practice time on the track is very limited, something that did not go unnoticed by Pilgrim. Andy Pilgrim has raced only once at Burke Lakefront, in SCCA World Challenge... In 1991.
"With the small amount of track time, the race engineers and the drivers will need to make quick decisions to get the best from the cars" said Pilgrim. "It will put a real premium on team performance." Pilgrim has 34 career top 10 finishes in 37 World Challenge starts; 12 top ten's out of 14 races since joining Cadillac in 2004.
