36TH ANNUAL NHRA K&N FILTERS SUPERNATIONALS
OLD BRIDGE TOWNSHIP RACEWAY PARK - ENGLISHTOWN, N.J.
JUNE 16-19, 2005*
*Cory Mac hopes to get untracked at Englishtown*
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. (June 14, 2005) - It's been an atypical season thus
far for Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog
Top Fuel dragster.
McClenathan, who is No. 5 on the career win list for Top Fuel drivers
with 28, has not advanced pass the first round in the last three events;
nor has he passed the second round since he went to the final round at
the O'Reilly Summer Nationals in Houston in early April. But the driver
that peers and fans alike call Cory Mac remains optimistic.
Cory Mac, who now calls Lake Havasu home, knows that there is a
turnaround in his future and would like that turnaround to begin with
the NHRA K&N SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in
Englishtown, N.J., this weekend.
"I'm going to be straightforward which might upset a couple of people,
but I have to say it as I see it," said McClenathan. "We're fighting a
major track preparation problem. The problem stems from NHRA having
different guys prep each track which results in inconsistent track
conditions from track to track. You can't count on any two track
surfaces to be the same. Things have changed quite a bit since Chad
Head left.
"Some of the other teams have hit on the right combination but our team
hasn't. They (NHRA) prep it one way and crew chief Todd Smith changes
the set up for that type of track and you go to the next event and it's
prepped differently. This is the problem we faced at Chicago.
"We can't seem to back the car down enough where we've got enough tuning
window to make enough big changes in the staging lanes. So, it's really
been tough for Todd Smith to change things where it will go down the
track every time because we don't always know what type of track we're
looking at when we get there.
"When I talk about consistent track preparation and how it affects our
setup I mean, if I don't do the same thing in the car every single time
then Todd can't tune around me. Track preparation follows the same line
of reasoning. If it's inconsistent, then Todd can't effectively tune
the car to the track. Hopefully, track preparation at Englishtown will
stay in a consistent form.
"Monday we tested at Chicago and the car went 4.52 (seconds) at 330
(mph) right off the trailer before a light misting rain curtailed any
further activity.
"We left Chicago thinking that we now have a much better window of
opportunity to be able to change in the staging lanes up to the time we
run according to the current track conditions. We did learn some
things. If NHRA stays consistent with what they're doing we should be
just fine in Englishtown this weekend.
"We're doing our hardest for FRAM, Autolite and our newest marketing
partner Torco Racing Fuels and Evan Knoll. We want to do our best each
and every time out and be good spokespersons for their quality products.
"I feel confident about the car and Todd's input to insure that we bring
our best to the line each time we run. Hopefully, the start of our
rebound will begin this weekend. We need to get back in this point
thing and do it soon.
"As disappointed as we may be at this point in time, we still feel that
this Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog dragster is a good, capable car and
this team is capable of winning races."
McClenathan is currently No. 9 in the POWERade Top Fuel point standings,
15 points behind eighth, 65 behind seventh, 78 behind sixth and 116 out
of the top five.
At Englishtown, Cory Mac has been to the final round three times: He
finished runner-up to Joe Amato in 1992 and 1998 and was runner-up last
year to Larry Dixon.
