NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - SOUTH CENTRAL DIVISION

CHEROKEE COUNTY MOTORSPORTS PARK, RUSK, TEXAS

            RUSK, Texas - NHRA South Central Division racers closed the
books on the fifth of seven races on the 2005 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series schedule.  Rookie Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Steve Torrence of
Kilgore, Texas, scored the win while Jimmy Jones of Cleburne, Texas, won in
Top Alcohol Funny Car.

 Torrence, who ran his first race in the class last month, the win marks his
second on the divisional level.  He also scored runner-up points at his
first race and earned a win at the NHRA national event in Topeka, Kan.  This
weekend, Torrence carried his No. 1 qualifying spot into the winner's circle
with a first-round win over No. 8 qualifier Carl Magee of Victoria, Texas,
and a win over defending division champion Ashley Force of Anaheim Hills,
Calif., in the semis.  In the final he beat former division champ Lee
Callaway of Channelview, Texas.  Torrence ran 5.511 seconds at 256.94 mph in
the final.

            For Jones, his final-round appearance was his fourth straight.
He won two and was runner-up at the division's last event in Memphis, Tenn.
Sunday's final-round match-up was a repeat of Memphis where he Jones squared
off against Jackie Stidham of Chickasha, Okla.  Today Jones took the win
with a 5.866-second, 244.74 mph pass.

            In Comp Eliminator, Rodger Brogdon of Tomball, Texas, scored his
second straight win.  This time it was over the event's No. 1 qualifier,
Craig Bourgeois of Metairie, La.  Super Stock racing brothers Gary and Jerry
Emmons, who, along with brother Terry are triplets, met up in the final.
Jerry, a resident of Pasadena, Texas, beat Gary of Friendswood, Texas.
Jimmy Hidalgo Jr. of Donaldsonville, La., beat Little Rock, Ark., racer
Kevin Stubbs in Stock Eliminator and in Super Comp, Aaron Tatum, Moore,
Okla., took the win over Lonnie Grim, Benton, Ark.  Reigning Super Gas
national champion Jonathan Womack of Houston also scored the win over Grim.
Whitehouse, Texas, resident Greg Parson beat Brian Hughes of Hughes Springs,
Texas, in Super Street and J. Lee Didier of Fort Smith, Ark., beat Kyle
Cannon of W. Helena, Ark., in the Top Sportsman final.  In Sportsman
Motorcycle, Chris LeBouef of Lafayette, La., beat Jerry Pomilla of Conroe,
Texas.  And Brandon Chauvin of Gonzales, La., took the win over Billy Selman
Jr. in Top Dragster.

            After the heat of the summer wears down, NHRA South Central
Division racers head to Noble, Okla., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag
Racing Series event.  The race is slated for September 16 and 17 at Thunder
Valley Raceway Park.
